I recall this piece weighing nearly ten pounds when we finally had to remove it.

Interesting thread. I have always wondered how large to let colonies get.

Sure they are nice, but I also really like the variety SPS have to offer. I have a couple colonies now that are about 1'x'1' in size or larger, and the take up alot of space. Before I made some changes, I had some SPS 24" tall.

While the table coral was huge, when I set up a new tank I have decided not to have any table corals due to how large they become.

I hear ya about the variety, but honestly if these sticks would grow faster, I'd love to have a tank with maybe 3 colonies. (and an attached frag tank with 100s of little 1" LE frags )

There is an LFS where I used to live, had a display around 800 gallons, every single SPS in there was 18"-24". Seeing that tank was life-changing. It's then that the corals become more than a backdrop and actually add dimension to the tank. Seeing fish swim in and out of the branches was priceless.

anybody can buy a ton of sticks and place close together but when you have BIG colonies that where grown by you well to me that is a true reefer and shows that you have been successful, not only in the short term but also long term (which is not easy).

agreed... now I think all the TOTMs are beautiful, but some of them just look like the owner went out and bought 100 maricultured minicolonies - that takes money, not time, dedication, effort, or skill. But I love seeing huge mature healthy colonies!

I am pretty sure totm have to be set up for a certian amount of time. At least it used to be, I remeber skipper telling me they looked for tanks that are at least a couple years old.

Nice big colonies guys!

Agreed - specially when you see all the colonies in the reef that are the same size. Anyone can buy a reef these days, it takes a little more time and skill to grow one.

the most recent picture of my staghorn

I'm digging through my pictures to see if I can find a full shot of it

I decided to just take a new one, not the best as the glass was dirty and pumps running
