Thanks for the good work grim.
Can you recommend a 4- bulb (overdriven) combination to be used with 220 watts of VHO super actinic, resulting in a 14-20k look? I have a 20" deep tank mixed with sps and lps. I think I am going to ditch the 2 175 watt 20k halides, but want to keep color in the acros and not fry the acans on the bottom. Thanks! |

I think a UVL Aquasun, ATI Aquablue and 2 ATI blue Pluses would be the best place to start.

Hey Grim
I am a newbie and just joined reefcentral and I did some searching on lighting but would like to get a more precise answer from you. I have a 75g aga 48x18x20 tank, right now, im just cycling 45lbs of fiji rocks. In the future, I would like to have some softies along with sps/lps and clams. From my seach, I think I should go with the 48" tek hood from reefgeek. Should I go with 6 or 8 blubs? Will this be adequate for clams n hard corals? Also, I wanted a more blue look, like a 14k or 20k metal halide. Thanks in advance |

Welcome to Reef Central!!! I have a 75 gallon tank and a TEK 6 bulb hood fits perfectly. You have an inch or 2 to get your hands into the tank.

Do this
Front UVL Super Actinic ATI Blue Plus UVL Aquasun ATI Aquablue UVL Super Actinic Ati Blue Plus The First and last lamp should be on one cord so you time those on first, say at 10AM, Add the next 4 lamps at say 11 or noon. Then reverse things at 8 or 9PM.

i could surely use some advice. i am currently overdriving the following bulbs (39W) on 2 icecap 660's (3 bulbs on each ballast). i dont remember the order specifically, but the bulbs are;
UVL AquaSun (10K) UVL Actinic White (12K) x2 Giessemann AquaBlue (11K) Giessemann Blue Plus x2 Couple questions; 1) I feel its a little too yellow (i dont like the UVL AquaSun), so I would like to replace it with another AquaBlue. I think i want to have an overall 14K color appearance (when compared to MH), so is this the right direction to go to achieve this? 2) Do i get more usable light (PAR) due to overdriving the bulbs? I dont really understand how that works. 3) I am upgrading tanks, from a 58 (3ft) to a 150 (5ft). I intend to run the 54W 4ft bulbs over the tank (6 or 7 bulbs). I do keep SPS corals, and I feel this is plenty of light. Anyone else have opinions? Thanks!

You have 4 whiteish bulbs and 2 actininc. Try adding another Blue Plus, they have almost as much par as the the white bulbs and will give you a bluer look.
You do get more PAR by overdriving. I think Grim found it was 30% more. --Ray |

I'd lose an actinic white for a blue plus and see what you end up with.

where else, besides reefgeek and premiumaquatics, carry ATI 39w bulbs?
Reef geek is out of the 39w ATI's and Premaqua is like $7 more than reefgeek. |

<<< 1) I feel its a little too yellow (i dont like the UVL AquaSun), >>>
Really? I really like the Aquasun T5 bulb, it has a good PAR rating, isn't as pink looking as the Actinic White, and doesn't seem to wash everything out like the Giesemann Aquablue bulb does. I think the Aquasun looks good in combination with either the B+ or the SA bulb too. All a matter of opinion I guess :-)

Anyone heard of or seen a "ATI Actinic Blue" T5 bulbs?
Was in a sw store in the weekend.... saw all the D&D bulbs, and newly instock ATI bulbs.... had the "Aquablue Special" & "Blue Plus" which we see normally. Then there were a few ATI labbelled (on the bulbs no less) "Actinic Blue". I asked the store and they had no clue what spectrum those are either. |

420 nm actinic. They are good when ran with blueplus but the UVL actinic is better by a tad.

Grim,
Just need your opinion about bulbs for T5, I just need your feedback, for my tank i have 4x54 watts for 37 tank, don't ask me about that is light is too big for tank, my wife got it to surprised me and she don't know what is size.. so anyway, I like to keep 4x54 watts for future to move to bigger size. I am planning to have clam, SPS and corals. what the bulbs are good for this, two ballasts with dusk and dawn. I already have GE 6700 because I use this to aligm the bulbs to set up for canopy. Sometimes, I tend to change my mind about bulbs so I need someone to mention then I will stop and buy it. |
