Well,

Things continue to go well with the tank except for the hermits. I found another dead body on the rockwork the other day. I can't figure out what the problem is.. all of them seem to be male. Maybe they're fighting and I'm finding the losers of these skirmishes? All snails are intact, so that can't be it. I'm going to post this question on the invert. section of RC.

The clowns are shameless. I stop to look at the tank and they start begging for food! I've been feeding the fish about 3 times a day. Is this too much?

The goby has really gotten comfortable in his surroundings. When I feed the clowns and chromis, he swims up the water column to feed with them.

Yes, that is too much unless you are just putting in a mere speck of food. Once a day is fine, with the occasional treat from time to time.

Great thread to follow along with. I am really excited about having something to tinker with ~ and its out there I just have to locate it. Enjoyed hearing about this (even lost a few pots playing poker on full tilt because reading this captured my attention)

Your tank looks nice and clean. How many snails does it have / will it have?

DKT,
Thank you for the complements on the thread, I am beyond flattered. I'm usually the one wondering where the time went while I'm following others' threads. I am glad that I can help you out in any way.

melev,
I have 10 Nassarius snails and one Astrea snail, as well as 10 (if all are still there) zebra hermits. I don't want to have too many snails and have to feed the cleanup crew, since my tank is fairly lightly stocked right now. The inside of the overflow has some tan algae growing in it where the water runs down the walls. A couple of snails have climbed inside to munch on the algae. I keep an eye on them and if they get down too far on the wall.

You never need to feed the clean up crew, and it will be very hard for you to starve them. Every day, new algae grows from the lighting and the nutrients in the water, as well as any fish poo that is released. You'll want at least 9 more Astreas.

melev,
Thank for the advice! I wanted to get some more Astreas today from the lfs and bring my baby sister on a field trip since she was visiting, but it was closed!! Oh well, I'll go during my break tomorrow. They have sales running for MLK Jr. day!

Do you have any suggestions for stocking the tank? What would you add? I was thinking maybe a cleaner shrimp? I'm thinking it may be too soon for another fish.

How about a new coral!

You should update your profile to include the tank stats for people like me that are trying to remember the details of your system.

Nice to see some pictures Your set up is looking nice and clean, so I take it your keeping up with you maintenance.

I agree with Marc, time for some corals, so do you have any favourites or hopefulls that you'd like to add?

Cheers

Chris

Schwe,
A trick that I use, following a similar water overflow while making RO/DI, is to set a timer. I swear, I still forget and breathe a sigh of relief when the timer goes off.
No longer all wet,

I used to put a 5 gallon bucket in the bath tub in the morning for RO/DI water. I'd have a full bucket when I got home from work, and probably ran just as much water down the drain. Now I have a 20 gallon trash can in the laundry that sits nicely between the furnace and washing machine. I made a bracket out of some acrylic that holds a toilet float valve that is all plastic. I always have water ready and I don't have to worry about flooding the house. I think the trash can was about $30 at Home Depot, definitely the most expensive piece. The toilet valve was about $4-$5 and a couple dollars for the acrylic. Plus hose and connectors, and a powerhead to fill carry buckets.

Just be sure to test po4 on a regular basis when using trash cans and the like. I find that after a few months use, phosphate leaches into the water, rendering it useless.

I now use a small fish tank that has been thoroughly cleaned

Thanks for the heads up, Chris. I haven't heard about that before, I'll keep an eye on it. I only use Rubbermaid brand and haven't had a problem (so far...).

Schwe, hopefully you will find a similarly simple solution to your water storage problem.

Thanks for the tips, everyone!

I have rubbermaid bins storing fresh and saltwater for topoff/water changes. I live in an apartment/townhouse and cannot do any major drilling to run the hoses from my ro/di to the storage bins. Because of this, the bins are in a spare bedroom and the ro/di is hooked up at our washer/dryer. I turn on the ro/di when I start to run low on my stored water and fill up buckets at a time and dump them in the storage bins. (Have I confused you yet? lol). It's a really inefficient process but my only option right now. When I flooded our hallway/spare bedroom I forgot about the bucket that was filling up that I use to transfer water to my ro-water bin.

I would LOVE a coral, but do not have the proper lighting right now. I was supposed to get a nice set of retrofit T5's for my birthday in December but we ran into a lack of funds situation, and bills are more important than T5 lighting.

I'm thinking we're going to order them this or next week, though!! Any suggestions? I was thinking the Hamilton T5 retrofit kits.. they include timers.

Do you have a link on what lighting you are considering?

I was thinking this...
"48" 4-54 Watt HO T5 Retrofit Kit"

http://www.hamiltontechnology.com/sh...+Retrofit+Kits
(Mods: I hope this link does not conflict with any RC policy, if so please remove it)

I was also considering the Icecap or Tek lighting kit from reefgeek.com

There is nothing wrong with posting links to items you plan to purchase.

Any opinions on the lights? Anyone?

Went to the LFS today to get some astreas and came back with this guy...

And here's a nice shot of the Goby:

It's so hard to get a sharp picture with this camera.. *sigh*

Ask him what brand of relectors, and ballasts come with it.

Just remember you get what you pay for. I would be more inclined to buy brand name products, when it comes to lights, I reckon quality will be more the most important factor. Get the best you can afford, any corals you buy will appreciate it.

Very nice addition. Do you know anything about this fish? Check for compatibilty to corals before purchasing any corals

Cheers

Chris
