210 Mixed Reef Build
So after 6 Months of having a 90 gallon Reef, I decided it's too small. I am going to order a Aqueon 210 RR from my LFS in the next couple of weeks for $1099. That doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. I'm making the stand. I'll post pics when the process gets started. I'll be putting the tank in the basement in a room that I'm going to revamp and turn into a "Reef room" I guess you could say.
I plan on using the 90 lbs of live rock (dry reef saver rock that has been cured and cycled for 6 months) I already have in the 90 and another 120 lbs of new reef saver rock. All new sand. The 90 lbs should be an adequate biofilter for the couple of fish and corals that I'm transfering over until the new rock cures. The 90 currently contains -2 Ocellaris Clowns -1 Pink Spotted Watchman Goby -1 Green Mandarin In Qt -1 Coral Beauty -1 Firefish -1 Green/Blue Chromis Fish I plan to add to 210 -Purple tang -Powder Blue tang I haven't thought much about fish as I am more of a coral guy, so any other suggestions are appreciated. I have a decent amount of lps and sps in the tank( keep in mind the tanks only been up for 6 months so I don't have many large colonies.) Equipment -37 Gallon sump. (or should I use the 90?) I am going to have a fuge, just haven't thought of a design. -Reef Octopus SRO3000INT -BRS Dual Reactor -I have some return pumps in mind but haven't decided, so any suggestions are welcome. -I currently have 3 black box leds that I plan on retrofitting with t5s. -Right now I have two koralia 1500s. I may add a mp40, or ditch the hydors and get two mp40s. The one picture below shows the room where the tank is going. I am -tearing down the desk where the tank is going plus half of the desk on the right wall. -adding tile -painting walls Grey -mounting TV -putting up doors Not sure what else I'll do to the room. Anyone have ideas? The picture of the freshwater tank is actually the tank I will be using for the sump. You may also notice the water is low in the qt tank. I am raising the salinity, and am letting evaporation do the job for me lol. I'll keep you guys updated as the process goes along. I should have the tank in the the next couple of weeks, but I plan on getting started with this room by the end of the week. |

Just out of curiosity, how do you post pictures in a format so that you don't have to click on them?

You need to upload your pics to a 3rd party image hosting service like Flickr, Photobucket, etc. Then link the URL of the pic back here to RC using the yellow mountain icon in the RC editor.
I hear Photobucket is starting to charge for this service so look around for other similar services. Dave.M

Thanks guys. I'll check out Flickr. I'm ordering the tank on Monday but it isn't going to arrive until 7/21 because the store I am ordering it through is closed early next week which is when it would normally be delivered. On a side note, I noticed in my Op I said I would transfer my old rock to the new tank and it would be an adequate filter. I should add that I am not transfering all of the live stock at the same time as the rock as there will be a small cycle. I'm going to leave the coral and fish in the 90g with maybe a rock or two while I let the 210 settle for a couple days. |

So I went to my Lfs today to get some cupramine and while I was there the guy told me they can't order a 210 for a month and they lost my number so couldn't contact me.
Now I am thinking about getting a Marineland 300 DD with starphire glass. Only problem is its $2199 vs the 210 at $1099. I'm not sure if it's worth paying an extra grand for another foot on the back. What do you guys think ? Plus don't the marine land 300s have a reputation for leaking? Here's a picture of the room painted and the floor down. |

I think you're asking this question on the wrong forum. Always go bigger if you have the chance.

Plus I like the back overflows on the aqeuon 210 vs the corner overflows on the Marineland 300 but that isn't a deciding factor. I'll keep you guys updated on what I choose. Any suggestions on which I should go with would be appreciated. This is a very hard decision for me. Last edited by Reefer1991; 07/19/2017 at 01:37 PM. |

The corners, sides and center of the tank will rest on the 2"x6"s which are supported buy 4"x4"s. I have some leftover wood so I may add supports on the sides... can't hurt. I am about to go sign up for tapatalk now, thanks |

Tank weight gets distributed to the corners and sides even if the stand is bigger supporting the sides is a good idea
No problem it’s funny how many people i recommend to the app and people love it |

So, it sounds like you're not going for the 300g?

I also decided to build the stand 40" high( 41" once I top it with plywood.) so I don't have to crouch down to look at everything. That's one of my biggest pet peeves with my 90g. |

My original stand stood at 42" for that reason as well. When I rebuilt it, it now stand at 44" because I didn't take into account leveling feet on my metal stand...so, it is now tougher to reach inside to feed (tank is 30" high). Definitely like the look of higher stands. The only downside is that it's hard to get a top down look for corals that are placed high.

Anybody have any experience with this skimmer? It's rated up to 800 gallons. I'm probably going to have around 360 gallons in the system..... overkill maybe?

I have a little 12" step stool next to the tank that I slide over if I need to do something quickly in the tank. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

WLachnit I just remembered I have a little step latter in the garage that I can sacrifice haha.
I noticed there is also a b10 version of the skimmer I linked above. The b10 is rated for 560 gallons where as the b11 is rated for 800. I'm tempted to go with the larger skimmer just to have some wiggle room. I'm a little worried about overskimming with the b11 though. This weekend I'm going to run out and grab a 75 gallon for the sump. I'm probably going to order acrylic for the baffles online. |

I'm am reading a lot of threads that say the 300dd overflows can only handle about 1400 gph but those were from a few years ago. Another guy mentioned in a thread much more recently that he runs about 1900 gph through his with no problems so i was thinking that maybe marineland changed the design of their overflows to accomadate more flow. Has anybody purchased a 300dd in the past year or so that knows how much flow the overflows can take? It'd be nice to know before I spend money on a return pump that's too strong. I'm looking to run about 3000gph if possible.

Got the sump in and the stand painted. I still need to add a few more supports and face the stand with raised panels to clean it up.

Thanks RedCar!!!
I picked up my rock and baffles yesterday. The glass baffles are a few mm's to wide. I was thinking about picking up a diamond file to shave down the baffles a few millimeters but I'm not sure how well that would work. I spent $120 on the glass, sucks that i didn't give them the right measurements. You live and you learn I guess. I bought 120 lbs of reef saver and 15 lbs of Tonga branch. |
