Tropical in Alaska! Meklo's Build
I've been into reef tanks for quite some time. I think I started around 2005. I've had a few tanks over the years, but there was always a limiting factor. Whether it was space, time, or budget. The last tank I setup was a biocube 29 HQI.
Fast forward to today... My better half and I bought a house and we decided it was time to setup a decent size reef with some of the options we've always wanted. While I could have chose a wide variety of sizes and shapes, I opted for a standard 180 rimless. It has a good footprint to work with. Big enough, but not too small. Overall, it was just a good fit. Here are some pictures of the setup, the stand build, and the building of the fish room! |

This is what we had to work with. The garage was in desperate need of attention. It needed a ton of work and still isn't finished. It is however, equipped with a fish room and definitely better than it was.

I ran three new circuits for the fish room and the tank. Some of the existing plumbing was replaced. It was definitely a hodge podge! The pictures are little disjointed, but I think the overall process comes through.

Here are some pics from the painting. Also, you can see my new (to me) sink! I had an old utility sink in storage from a job I did a while ago. I figured it was time to put this good use! A lot of the materials for this build I had on hand; so I was able to save a little bit of money in that area.

Setting up the storage containers!
I had a hard time finding decent storage containers. Which is why I went with brute trash cans. Shipping was outrageous to this area, so I went with these. Not my ideal setup, but it definitely does a great job so far. |

I haven't been overall happy with the way I needed to suspend the light fixture. I had to run two boards perpendicular to the tank to mount the fixture. I think in the near future I will probably do something to cover that up. I haven't exactly made up my mind yet. However, I don't feel it looks bad and no one else has really noticed at all.

Couple pics of the plumbing and sump.
It has a 4' overflow with a bean animal style overflow. The return is a varios 6. |

Finished aquascape and trying out the moonlights. I installed the apex moonlights onto the Cebu sun light fixture. So far, I think I came up with a decent way to solve that problem. You can also see that I put tape over the middle led to create more shadows. Also, don't judge the huge cluster of wires around the sump area.

The one in anchorage will be overnighted. They mail them on Alaska Airlines and you pick the box up at the airport. Usually, Tim or Brandon will let you know when they dropped it off and you can expect when the flight arrives.
The other vendor ships Fedex and it takes 2 days. Fedex's overnight is actually two days shipping. No exception. Last shipment they sent made it to anchorage by 6:00 a.m. It could have been here by noon if they wanted. Instead they left the fish at the facility until the next day before shipping. That was a bummer. I will be fragging, but it will be a little while before I get there. I will definitely keep you in the loop! |
