buying new clam?

heyy, so i want to buy a 1 1/2" maxima soon. ive been doing a lot of reading for the requirments of clams. what i understand so far is......
1. dont need to supplementary feed if you have fish (check)
2. place small rock or flat piece under sand and then place clam ontop to attach
3. medium to low flow
4. can live happily under t5s. (check, i have 4 bulbs--2 atinic, 2 white), and the tank is 16 inches deep

am i good to go? is there anything else is should know before i try this little guy?

burp after drip acclimation if it is exposed to air at all
understand that the smaller ones are more prone to issues, since they are younger
check for snails
find where it was in the lfs relating to the light
pics are necessary

I was not aware of that. Is it a common issue for clams?

many people have more trouble with smaller clams and blame it on the need to feed, when all it is is youth, more stress, not as heavy/strong/used to change, etc. ive lost more under 2" in qt than i have bigger ones pre main tank, fwiw. i'd much rather buy 2+ inches

smaller clams tend to be more sensitive.

Great, thanks for the info. Any other tips? I haven't kept clams in many years, so this is my first in a while.

depending on your experience with Saltwater if you dont have much chances of survival are slim when its that small. You should find one that is atleast 3inch+ and it will have a better chance..

hey! so sorry it took so long to respond, everything got super busy!

so i bought the clam, acclimated him for like 2 1/2 hours, then put him on top of this piece of live rock half buried in the sand. He partially opened up, the next morning he had moved off the rock onto the sand, but was still not opened. i have moved him around a few times trying to find a spot without too much flow....so hard.

any tips or ideas?

and also how do i post pics?

advice-
don't move it. let it "settle" where it wants to be, and leave it alone....

he had "fallen over" on his side the other day, so i went to set him back up....but he was attached! i dont know if he managed to bury through my inch or two of sand to the bottom or if there is a rock under there that he likes, but i just left him. i think hes happy!

Don't buy small maximas; the maxima and crocea are the hardest clams to keep. Even the clam expert Fatherree says to not buy little ones. I lost a small maxima and a crocea. The larger squamosa is fine and now I have a derasa.

alright. so hes been fine. hes been happy. today i came downstairs and found that he had moved, unattached, and wasnt open. im assuming its because i found a million baby snails on the sand. is there anything i can do to save the clam? i picked him up and put him on a high rock. how do i get rid of the snails??? help!

I have found that if they fall too many times it is a major stressor.

Crocea at 1 inch and Maxima at 1.5 inches or so are hardy and will do fine if their needs are met. Most important is to make sure they are healthy (visible white new shell) and free of parasites particularly Pyramid snails and PMD.
