Anemone closes up when Clown touches it

Just as the title explains, my RBTA closes up whenever my Occellaris clown touches it... How can it host an anemone, if the anemone doesn't let it?

Yea the anemone is the host not the clown. Think about it this way: when you invite friends over to your house who is the host? The friends or you? Obviously you are its your house. Same concept with the anemone. The clown is being hosted by it. Allowing it into its home (body).

Anyways back on topic.. Anemones sometimes will ball up at first since it recognizes the clown as an object but over time it will begin to recognize the clown as part of itself and not even know he is there

it changes sizes, sometimes it can be 5 inches across, now it is in a 1- 2 inch ball - Clowns are 1 inch and 2 inches

Ok the anemone should be fine, if the anemone is to small clowns can bug it to much to kill it but it is a good size.

I don't think there is any guarantee it will ever happen.

I disagree with you. Based on this quote from an article it is certain that eventually the anemone will not be able to know the existence of the clown living inside it therefor cannot react to the clowns presence

It is believed that the clownfish is protected due to a mucus coat on the outside of its skin. Studies have suggested that the clownfish’s protection can be innate, acquired, or both, depending upon the species. It is suggested that some species of clownfish are innately protected from an anemone’s sting before ever coming into contact with the anemone. This is because the mucus coat they produce is sufficient to protect them from the anemone’s sting. Others, however, must acclimate to the host anemone before they can move freely among its tentacles without being stung. They do this by rubbing themselves on the anemone’s tentacles over and over again. Initially, the clownfish are stung by the tentacles, but over time, they appear to be unharmed.

Interestingly, even clownfish that are innately protected exhibit this “acclimation behavior.” After initial contact, they acquire antigens from the anemone they have encountered. It has been proposed that these antigens serve as a type of “chemical camouflage” for the fish. With the acquisition of these antigens, the anemone is no longer able to distinguish between itself and the clownfish. The result is that the anenome no longer reacts to the fish by stinging.

Well I know it is being hosted, that is not the issue. Because my clown (at night) tries to go inside the anemone, but it just balls up. Like I said before, this has been happening since I purchased the nem, (2 - 3 weeks ago)

I thought anemones closed up into a ball at night. Could this be normal behavior the OP is seeing or is closing up at night only for some species and not all?

BTW, 31 Spooner st. Quahog, Rhode Island is where Peter Griffin lives. "hahahaha, he said Peter."
