Just getting back into the hobby after a 7yr layoff! And pick up a used system which this sump. Any suggestions on how this would be the most efficient?

If possible (it's hard to tell hight of over flow from the pics) maybe move the pump to the smaller compartment and use the larger one the pumps in currently for fuge space?

The smaller area is probably for the return pump with the medium area being used for a refugium or media. That would be my guess.

It seems like a waste of smace to have the return pump in such a large compartment

If the original user also built/designed this it could have just been extra space they didn't know what to do with. I'd personally try it with the pump in the smaller area making it a usable part of the sump and using the larger part for something else weather it's a fuge, media area, dosing area etc. Putting such a small quantity of rock seems almost pointless to me from a bacteria hosting stand point. unless you were to get a super surface area type media or something, maybe. As it's set up I would think that everything would get traped in that small area making it counter productive for filtration. This is just speculation, I could be wrong on both points but I'd get a small hose or some pvc and loop the pump from the compartment right to the sock, fill it with water and see how it operates even putting a little tank gunk in the mix to see where it ends up then you can play with lay out a little with out messing up your final project.

Thanks for the info! That’s a good idea to soft plumb and see how it works out! I’ve been out of the hobby since 2011, how things have changed.
