Bill.

I'm assuming it doesn't matter what size the pipe is, (no jokes please!) Mine is 1 1/4 inch. Do I need a 4 " PVC piece to glue to the cover, or will a 3" do the job? Does it matter?

Oh, and one more thing.... make a standpipe? I hear that and think "DURSO" so it's just a friggin' pipe in your bulkhead, nothing more right? No holes in it, nothing?

Yes no holes, just a pipe. Mine are 1.5" and i used a 4" pipe. 3" would probably work but 4" might be better.

Cool, I'm gonna try it. I don't know if the 4" will fit, I'll check when I get home.

Question on this.....Our drains are above the water, inside filtersocks. I thought the drains had to be above water to create the splashing that adds oxygen into the water. Forgive the question if it seems dumb. My husband is usually the one that does all the maint. on the tank, but I really would like to quiet ours down. It seems awfully loud.

Drains should be under the water by a couple of inches. Above the water makes too much noise.

Mine is above water into a filter sock, but enclosed under the stand, I dont' think it makes much noise at all, but that's my opinion.

Wouldn't them being under the water cause resistance to prevent the water from not draining properly?

Not flooding is great, but Im not sure a month or so qualifies and being tried and true. I like the idea, but Im not exaclty sure what keeps the critters out, Just the overflow teeth and lid?

What if you used a 2" coupler over a 1.5" drain pipe? That would be a small enough gap around the pipe to allow water, but nothing of significant size.

btw.. my tank is completely silent. I run a full syphon (just an open pipe under water) with emergency drain- a must.

Right!! Me too.....as soon as I can figure out what size adapter to get to fit our sump, and as soon as I convince my DH that it just might work without flooding the house.........hmmmm....maybe I should just figure it out myself and do it while he is at work. hehehehehe

Will this work if you just have an elbow inside the tank no over flow "box"? Could I just epoxy the acrylic to the lip of the tank to hold the tube over the elbow? I just hooked my sump up last night and it was just constant burps and bubbles and noise, I have to quiet it.
And as a side note where does everyone get there filtersocks at? Do they work well for quieting down the sump, and elemating bubbles? thanks -peccavi18

I built this and glued it on my lip because I don't have an over flow "box" it really works when I have my flow turned way down but I have a mag12 and have it throttled down to what I'd equate to a mag7. When I turn it up it fills the tank and starts sucking real hard and then it sucks it down to the bottom of the tube, like if it had surged, or flushed. (would be a good surge device) I don't want to burn up my pump it's new. What would allow me to turn my flow up? If I made the hole a bit bigger? Bigger tube around the overflow?? It's 1 1/4" overflow with a 3" tube down around it. thanks-pecc

The yo-yoing effect of the water is due to an air hole that's too small. Either make the hole bigger or put another small hole into the top.

For those worried about this flooding, it really can't, unless your pump is already putting more water in the tank than the standpipe can drain, in which case ANY design implemented would flood. The standpipe is lower than the overflow and the bigger pipe on the lid is just keeping the entry of the standpipe effectively under the water a couple inches.

Nice design in that it also prevents salt creep and splash from the overflow and further dampens sounds by covering the entire overflow. I think I'll probably put this on my 2 new tanks (September or October... I'm a VERY patient person!).
