Thanks. The trick was to be liberal with the Turbo Calcium and cut out all other additives. I was adding a very small dose based on the instructions. I ended up adding about 140 tbsp over 24hrs.

Alk 13 dKH
Ca 450ppm
pH 8.3
Temp 77
Salinity 34ppm

Lavoisier, the term I was looking for is abiotic - sorry for the confusion.

Ah....yes. Many interesting articles on the subject. I thought Randy's article http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-06/rhf/ was helpful, but I will need to read it a couple of times to be sure!

Wow! You're anemone and star are between the glass and the back of the rock work?! Talk about Murphy's law. I don't think I've ever heard of that happening.

I know. I have the cards stacked ...

They both got out and found friendlier hangouts. That's a rose bubbletip and should be very light loving. I think my MHs and LEDs are a little too much for these store kept animals.

Working on seeding the tank with coralline. I filed a few pieces with a nail file and adding purple up to the mix.

Here's the result of a couple of hours of filing:

 photo 0BEFE23C-D9F1-4E52-9226-11FBDB3400B3_zpsme2hj5ix.jpg

The bottom is fluidized calcium powder. Not sure what's in the pink water above.

Next time, I'm going to sun cure the rock with coralline in the garden until it starts to encrust.

Interesting, I'm curious as to how the coraline seeding works out.

That is a great idea!

Ok. Update time.

This looks like coralline forming under the hair algae?

This is where I sprayed the mix. Not sure what it is though

So the pink "blotch" is starting to look more like coralline.

I tried a lot of things so I'm not sure which did it:

1. Crushing the coralline
2. Sanding the coralline
3. Adding PurpleUp
4. Used the pink fluid
5. Used the fluidized calcium from sanding
6. Dispersed at high flow
7. Deposited at low flow

If I could, I'd isolate each variable and test it in a controlled environment to determine what actually grew coralline and which was fastest.

I like how porous your looks. I did something very similar just over 2 years ago and it took about 6 months after seeding it to start noticing any coralline growth on the fake rock. Now it is well established. There were a lot of different cycles, just be patient.

I got green coralline to grow. But I've started planting corals

Thanks. I didn't think enough of how coral and live rock would influence the final result. If I had, I'd have made it all much thinner. Here's the day/night look
