safe eats?
There are some reports of ciguatera in Lionfish ...around Caribbean / St John USVI.
I'd treat them like barracuda and only eat the smaller ones. And if your arm goes numb after eating it ...throw it up quick |

They're taking over the Gulf as well. A guy here who does rig dives sees them everywhere in abundance now.
We should start a rumor that they are a potent aphrodesiac. That might do the trick. |

Hi all,
Even here in Fiji we have heard that the lionfish are now an invasive species in the US Gulf / Carribean areas, The speculation was that it was released by aquarists, but a marine biologist I know said it was more likely that the fry came in ships ballast water as they are too numerous and wide spread for intentional or accidental release. To bad as they really have no natural predators in the Atlantic Gulf area, and I think they will eliminate any fish species they can swallow, and the Atlantic species would have no defence. |

They started out as very few and very localized. It took a few years before the spread just all of suddenly became explosive. There have also been genetic analysis done that show all these lionfish started out from all of 6 parents. While ballast water has certainly spread numerous critters, larval fish are the least likely to survive the dark ballast tanks for time required to get here from the Pacific...they'll starve in a very short period of time without being able to see to eat.

This past weekend I saw a TV infomercial about eating them. They said the best way to get them is with a Hawaiian Sling. Then staying underwater cutting the venomous spines with a good knife or scissors. Then either collecting them to cook or even to cut them up so the other fish know how to get them. Like the snappers...

Proud to have participated in the Lion Fish Safari held last year in Cozumel! Our group collected nearly 50 over 4-6 dives.
Was intended to raise awareness and give restaurants a new item for their menus! Hopefully to lessen the collection of over fished species. |

As a lion fish fanatic l hate to read all this. I do however see the need to do something about the population and the problems being caused. Kinda a catch 22. I wish that more of these local lions were at lfs rather then the two babies l seen this morning.

It be a strange day indeed when one finds oneself "promoting" the sale of wild caught animals.

As for how they got there, I heard at one time something about Hurricane Andrew was it and some big display tanks that broke maybe at private residence maybe at Bay of Biscayne or somesuch? I don't think the ballast transport theory would work for larval fish; jellies, zebra mussels, OK; predatory fish? Probably not.
It was one of my first fish a few decades ago, love 'em, very cool animal. Where they belong. When I think of non-native introduced things I think of German Cockroaches, Norway or other non-native rats, House Mouse, fire ants, feral hogs and cats, West Nile Virus, kudzu and a hundred other plants, Starlings, House Sparrows, and I could go on and on...... These things never turn out well. No natural predators is a problem. They inevetably upset if not destroy the balance of nature. The cat is out of the bag. Hope they get popular fried. birdfish |

I was just reading that out a bunch of lions, more than a quarter exceeded federal levels for a ciguatera. Most recently I heard that in June 2012. I was a fan of the "If you can't beat em, let's eat em" campaign originally, but not after hearing about the preliminary ciguatera data. I know certain areas are going to be more prone to the higher levels, but I wouldn't be able to confirm where the one on my plate came from.... pass.

I know they were trying to "train" some. Wouldn't that be sweet.

Here are some NC caught Lions. They sure were tasty. I have not heard any poisoning reports from NC, but then again most dont eat them....
These were very large lions, caught offshore of Wilmington. ~Michael
