What size pump? ECOTECH MARINE VECTRA S1 CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

So I have had two Tam Rio Hyper Flow 26 (RIO HF26 pumps for a long long times. (They have died and been replaced 4-5 times) Both are in my sump and both are return pumps to the tank. One goes through a Chiller-JBJ Artica Titanium Chiller 1/3 hp and the other goes directly back into the tank. It is a 180 gallon and the distance from the bottom of the sump to the top of the tamp is about 5 ft. My water goes out of the bank though an overflow box and back drilled tank.

I use two Vortech pumps inside the tank to move water. An MP 40 on one side and an MP 60 on the other. The MP 40 has a battery back up.

I want to replace the Tam Rios with 2 ECOTECH MARINE VECTRA CENTRIFUGAL PUMP. I am looking for controllable DC pumps and I trust EC.

I have two questions:

1. What size/model Vectras should I get? Do they need to be the same?
2. What battery back up can I get to run them in case of power failures.

The tank is hard plumbed with PVC except the tubing from the Rio Hyper flows is flexible PVC.

A single M1 or L1 should be enough for your tank. Maybe 2 battery back up depends on what other pumps or heaters you

The tank is plumbed so one output does directly though the chiller and second pipe is a return into the tank through the back.
I like having the redundancy of two pumps in case one dies.
So I would need two M1s or two L1s?

I would think twice --
The L1's are trouble prone & can run hot, says so right in the instructions.

Agreed their reliability is also terrible

If you are set on Vectra, then a pair of M1 would seem about right. The current incarnations of the battery backup for the vortech also works for the Vectra. Assume older versions do as well, though might want to check with ETM.

+1 I'm on L1 number 4 since they came out. I always get a replacement for free but doing this every 9 months or so is annoying. As for battery backup, there is no better one than a generator.

i want to upgrade to one but sicce's comparable pump to the vectra is the sdc line and i really don't see many people running them just yet.

It comes with a 5 year warranty.
They haven’t been out as long as the vectras that’s why you don’t see too many people using them. If my sicce ever fails I’m going to get another one. The one I have running my tank is almost 10 years old.

I use one M1 externally on my 180 and run it at 50%. It is a replacement from the original M1 that died after 11 months. The newer one pumps more water than the original so I am guessing Ecotech fixed there issues? You are the second person who complained about Rio HF pumps. I use Rio Plus on some of my tanks with great success, I will make sure never to buy a Hyper Flow!
