Anthais Not Doing Well

Came home to find my anthais laying down not looking so good. He’s been laying around the last few days. Not sure what’s up. No signs of aggression or disease. All my fish were quarantined. The only thing I can think of is that he’s just old since the guy who had him before me had him for several years.

Here’s a pic. Still normal breathing. Going to see if he eats in a bit.

Did the guy who had him before you have any more Anthias or just the one?

I think he had three. It’s been in my tank for about eight months I’d say.

Anthias are really social within their own group. If it had friends at one point, it might be missing them. If it had always been a single Anthias, I wouldn't be saying this, but the poor guy looks lonely to me.

Aw. Well he didn’t make it. Died about an hour ago. RIP little guy. I don’t know what happened to the other ones. But when I got him he was alone, but I do know the guy who sold him to me had two more. That sucks. I had no idea he was lonely but I don’t think he died of loneliness. Maybe next time I’ll get three.

Sorry Hoping old age. I had a group of Lyretail that aged out between 6 and 8 years.

He probably didn't die from loneliness, but who knows? Anthias are Reef friendly fish, but they are same species community fish. That one is the male in absence of his harem of mates.

The other thing about Anthias is they're kind of like Mandarins...they require multiple feedings throughout the day which can be a very tedious chore.

At least you were able to enjoy him for the last 8 months, and he did look fat, so he probably just aged out.

R.I.P. Mr. Anthias

Yeah he was a fatty, even when he died he was big when I pulled him out. He ate 3x a day.

I kept single anthias for 5+ years. Plus they change to males as they get older, that was a female. I cant look at that fish and say "no sign of disease". It was definitely sick

Hard to say from a single picture. But it has frayed fins and white patches on the body. Can be anything from a protozoan or bacterial infection to flukes.

I think the white patches and frayed fins are from my crabs, my wrasse, and shrimp pecking at him while he was laying on the sand personally. Especially because I QT all of my fish for at least 30 days and feed them a combination of Dr G's, API General Cure, Focus, Metroplex, and Kanaplex on a regime.

Also the morning I left for work he was fine, swimming around, no frayed fins or signs of sickness.

Just my observations.

I typically put sick or dying fish in my refugium so they have a peaceful, nonviolent death.

That's a good idea. When I knew he was a goner (laying on his side with literally barely a motor function just slow breathing) I put him in an ice bath.
