New substrate?

Can I put new substrate on top of old substrate? I have crushed coral and I thought I put down enough, but I would like to add some more. The tank has been running for about a year and has about 70 pounds of live rock. Can I mix crushed coral with sand?

I asked this awhile ago a the general answer was just add alil at a time to allow things in the sand to move up. i am sure someone else will chime in with more info.
