I was about to give up on my ETSS 700 skimmer, when it finally started to produce skimmate. For some unknown reason, it stopped producing skimmate and then it took 6 weeks before it started again. Did not do anything to it nor the display tank. Go figure. I purchase a new skimmer thinking the ETSS was gone. Going to go with the new skimmer for my tank. Waiting for it to break in. It is a NW type and got a great price on this new skimmer.

Relax. Did you see me say ANYTHING negative about Gary. No, and you won't find anything negative about him under my name on this board or any other. I have spoken with him several times over the 10+ years I have owned ETSS skimmers. If I had an issue with Gary, I would call him to discuss it, I certainly wouldn't take it up here. The ONLY brand skimmer I have used to this date is AETech. My post was meant to be a compliment to jdieck, as we both live in the western burbs of Chicago and he is very active helping folks on this thread. Sorry you interpreted it differently. Best Regards. |

etss service
I am actually thinking of getting a different brand skimmer just because the customer service there isn't that great anymore.
I have had 9 different etss models and always loved them. However I have emailed them several times about a pump and never get replies. I called twice and got the same guy who is very short and doesn't explain his answers to my simple questions. I am in customer service and it stinks to use great products that have minimal support. All I wanted was a reply to my emails or someone to spend more than 15 seconds on the phone with me. So I will start looking at new ones. |

You can, but much better is to build a stand so that the outlet is above the water line. In any case the outlet is not supposed to be submerged more than an inch or two.
BUT ... if there is any, and I mean any, variation in the sump level, you will not get consistent performance out of the skimmer and it will drive you nuts. I had a small stand built out of acrylic, and it works just great.

gotcha. Trying to make less heat in the refugium. Mag pumps seem to make lots of heat.

Just curious |

Bought a used ETSS 800, haven't got my system setup yet but I'm wondering if I should replace the bioballs with new ones or just give them a vinegar bath to clean them up? I don't think this skimmer has been used for a couple of years so the bioballs have been stored completely dry if that makes a difference at all. Thoughts?
