i use a maxijet 400. i use about 50 grams of phosban and a couple Tbsp of carbon mixed in the reactor for my 55 mixed reef.

I'd use a maxijet. The size of the powerhead depends on the height (head pressure) between where the powerhead is placed and the inlet of the phosban reactor.
I use phosban for my media. |

i have my maxi400 throttled way back, so i am guessing that it could handle alot more media, Especially since you don't want alot of flow thru the reactor.

How do you throttle back? A small ball valve? Are you using 1/2" ID tubing?

there is a little ball valve that comes with the reactor. hmmm.... to be honest i'm not really sure what size the tubing is, my best guess is 1/2 or 5/8 I.D. im sure you could search premium aquatics or marine depot's websites and find out for sure.

Thanks for the replys! I'm placing an order tonight at drsfostersmith.com they have the reactor for $34 and a mj400 for $12, they said something about 1/2" ID tubing, so I guess I'll buy that too.

no problem. enjoy the reactor, it works really well. also, you can probably find the tubing at Home Depot for cheap.

I ran a rio600 on mine and had to throttle it WAY down because it would tumble the media so much, it would escape the reactor. I'm going to try one of the mini-jets or similar next.

I have a minijet on mine and still have to throttle it back unless I put a lot of media in it (more than recommended). Although, I'm currently running only carbon in it (half full) and it tumbles it all except maybe the bottom 1/4-1/2".
