Reef Octopus BH-2000

Hi,

I am looking at buying a Reef Octopus BH-2000 protein skimmer because my SWC mimi HOT skimmer died after three months of use! I called SWC and they told me I let the skimmer run dry, not possible because it was always producing skimate, it was also putting stray current into the tank. I don't recommend anyone to buy their products as they don't back their products up. Enough with that.

I am going to be using this skimmer for my SPS dominated reef. I plan on doing some type of carbon dosing in the future. The tank is a 40 gallon breeder. Fish list is 2 allen's damsel, a randalls anthias, yellow coris wrasse, and a chaulk bass. I may add some type of blenny in the future.

Will this skimmer be a good choice for me? If not what do you suggest?

Thank you
Jarred

If you have a sump try the reef octo nwb 110. I've used one for about 8 months and love it, really gets some nasty gunk out. I'll never purchase another brand skimmer again.

Well I don't think you can go wrong with anything from reef octo but maybe someone else who has used that skimmer can chime in for ya

I have a 40B with the BH2000. It works great. You'll love it. I wish I had an in-sump now though since I added a sump recently.

One thing to watch out for is the over-flow skimmer cup has teeth that are SUPER easy to break off. You can put them back on with a lighter though. Just light the end on fire, wait 2 seconds and blow it out, and stick it back on.

Also it doesn't always start right up after you shut it off. Sometimes you might have to cycle it a few times. And you don't need either of the sponges that it comes with. I lightly put the one on top of the output chamber just enough to touch the water surface and that takes care of most of the bubbles. I get almost 0 bubbles coming out of mine. None at all at the moment.

Do you think it will be over kill? What's the difference between the BH-1000 and BH-2000?

It's a good skimmer. The only issue I have is it does produce some micro bubbles. I think the SRO hang on backs have bubble traps.

I think the only difference is gallon rating. As far as cleaning it comes apart easy to clean. Ive heard the bigger the better. If you go to a bigger tank you have a skimmer that will work.

My brother in law has this skimmer. He bought it based on the quality for the money of my Reef Oct 3000 in sump. It took about 2 weeks for it to break in......does a really good job. Built like a tank as well. For a HOB and the size of your tank...you won't be dissapointed.

It did produce bubbles at first. Now I don;t see any at all in his tank. Very quite as well

Most of the time after break in, I've had few times with micro bubbles nothing serious. Not sure if it was from changes in water or what. Like I said it was not a issue. I also use 2 sicce voyager 3's for circulation works great. Also use a fluval 306 filter.
