Deathco off Powers had an ich outbreak in their SW tanks about 4 weeks ago, not sure what they did to correct the issue...

I personally have NEVER had any fish die that I bought from the PetCo off of Lake. It has been a while since I've been there, but I've always had good luck. The one off Powers looks like a concentration camp/death chamber for fish.

The Petco on Lake always seems to have at least one SW fish with ich, particularly the large angel species. I've had mixed results with their fish. Whenever I get anything from them I take my time acclimating them to my water.
I do know they use super low SG (1.016 or lower if I remember correctly). I can't remember if they use copper too. I think the only fish I ever got from them that died were yellow tangs. They would eat but always looked too thin in the stomach, then die. All the rest seemed to do ok. |

I was there a week ago and the Powers store had pretty sickly looking fish. A yellow tang two minutes from death.

I think if you look close enough at every LFS store in town you will find parasites, the only one I know of using preventative measures is seascape with their UV's but still, I have brought home fish from there with the synptoms of cryptocarrens, amyl, etc...no way can these fish come from the distributor without some being infected and infecting others. I'm not a huge fan of Petco but the Cheyenne Mtn Petco has come along way. The vast majority of their fish are healthy and the sources are similar to where the LFS' get their stuff. They also have a lot of ORA. I would much rather support the local efforts but sometimes Petco gets things others won't. Like right now they have a TR juvi Maculosa angel...you won't find that fish anywhere in town.

I agree with Eric. I would rather support the local LFS, but Petco just gets stuff they do not. I have never seen a purple firefish anywhere else. Bought a carpenters flasher warasse from Seascape the other day. It is still laying on the bottom. Hope it pulls through. Very pretty fish.

its funny I was at a petco the other day buying crickets for my gf's pet newt... don't ask.
anyways I noticed all the sick fish, and my girlfriend made me buy one (baby blue tang), who's already back in good condition... but anyways, i was talking to the manager about his set-up. He was complaining about how he could never get the salinity right, and how he has 5 gallons of evaporation a day... yada yada yada... I tested the salinity for him and it was reading 1.035+ After more discussion with the manager I found out this: Apparently thier corporate offices who also "train" the managers to be "knowlegdable" on subjects involving thier livestock taught him that you are never supposed to top off with RO, only saltwater. It was the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, I talked to him for a while and explained that by lowering the salinity to 1.017-1.019 it would be less stressful on the fish and gave him a slow way to lower the salinity back to where it needs to be. I was blown away that the corporate offices teach thier managers things that are that entirely wrong. Its the very basics of where saltwater husbandry starts... SALINITY. I am assuming that this problem is universal throughout all the Petco's and have been trying to figure out a way to contact the corporate person in charge of thier saltwater standards to have chat. So if you any one knows a contact I would greatly appreciate it.

Not to take the side of Petco, but the store down here has their maintenance and top offs done buy an independent company. Their employees only catch and bag the livestock. The tanks and fish still look horrible, so I don't buy from them. They actually have two 5" purple tangs in a 45 gallon display!

i also heard that thier wild caught stock was captured through cyanide poisoning? i don't know if its true though...
maybe the tank maintenance revolves around the owner of the particular franchise?

As for the cyanide collecting...I know who the distributor is that this south side Petco uses and they are the same source that many LFS' use. I can't speak for the other locations, but there are only one or two wholesale distributors who collect in areas where cyanide is still used. They are waining very quickly...

Maybe some of the franchises are cleaning up their acts and realizing that there is good money in quality live stock.

A note for Murfman.... in case you are considering that cute juvenile tank raised maculosus:
I've always had a soft spot for them and had one many many years ago in a 100 gallon tank. I received an ORA tank raised mac for my birthday about 4 years ago. He was very cute... barely pushing 2". He went to live in my 175 bowfront. Today, my Dwarf Mac (I still remember him that way) is pushing 12" with streamers. He's a horse.... and his colors are fabulous. So... if you buy the little guy.... remember that he'll grow quick. -Rob

I'll post a pic early this week....
Spent the last 3 days swapping out my 100 reef for a new 120.... installed an Oceans Motions and cleaned everything up. It's been a busy 3 days..... Have about 15 minutes till I get to fire everything back up.... verify that I caught all the leaks... then go to bed. I'm exhausted.
