Water quality gone bad? It sounds like stress and a need for fairly large water changes over several days, and that the poor things have had it- sorry for your loss.

It sounds like it is spawning to me, that will also mess with water quality so water changes are in order and I would run carbon as well

is it common for them to do this before spawing
i have never noticed this before
but all the other times it seemed to happen when lights were off and i would notice the splits after work
the one that was smoking split about 2-3 months ago
the other a couple nights ago

I agree that it's spawning. Your corals will love it but it isn't great for your water quality if he get's too carried away. I notice the SPS fluffing up when that's in the tank.

My RBTA does that from time to time and is still big, pretty and healthy at 4 1/2 years old. It also has never split so I don't know that splitting or not has anything to do with it.

How do your other corals look? If everything else looks ok I would guess that your RBTA is spawning. If not, check parameters. JMO

Agreed with the others, it's very likely spawning. Some water changes may be in order, but in general it's not a big concern.
