The Bare Bottom Club

Well, after four years of sand I've made the decision to go bare bottom. So I guess I'll find the bare bottom club and see if I can join

Many different ways to skin a cat, but this has been the best approach for me..... good luck!

I dont think that would count, but why would you go through the hassle of empyting your tank of all the sand?

Because, zach0660, my sand is icky.
I'm battling a hair algae siege and the sand is covered in little hair algae tufts. It's also clumping up like chunks in kitty litter.
I realize it's a messy task, but I've been itching to go bare bottom for a while and now I have nothing to lose but a nasty poo and hair algae layer.
I'm also of the persuasion that it'll be easier to control water quality in the sand's absence because it won't be there to hold onto that abominable brown mystery sludge which I abhor.
I don't think this will cause a disastrous system failure, the sand wasn't raging deep or anything and I think it's contribution to the filtration was negligible, perhaps even detrimental.
Besides, too late now, I just finished!

Oh, by the way, I'm not trying to launch the endless debate over "to use sand, or not to use sand".
If you use sand and like it and it's not gross like mine, cool. I know the sand issue is kind of like "Chevy, or Ford", and neither side will ever convince the other completely.
I'm just switching to "Ford" because my "Chevy" let me down.

I've never been happier! Remember, open aquascaping and lots of flow!

BB since 2005.

Starboard looks pretty cool after 2 years. All kinds of little creatures living on it.

Going barebottom isnt going to fix any of that.

You need to fix your husbandry.

Ah, speaking from experience, it's much easier to manage and "husband" (I'm quite certain that's not a verb) a tank without sand while battling hair algae (not saying they're easier overall).

I did the same in late '05 and have been very pleased. My new 150 is without sand, and I'm quite pleased. There are a few nuances, but once figured out it can be a real treat. Good luck!!

We're doing the initiation ceremony for Houtz at MACNA XIX. To finalize his membership into the gang ... err club, he's going to have to clean the bare bottoms of all the founding members. In public.

I'm doing the same. Pulled out all the sand, installed high flow closed-loop, working on reaquascaping. Looking forward to something different.

I also switched to BB about 1 month ago from DBS and so far I just LOVE it! I don't think I'll be going back now.
