Better color, better growth and coral much happier. I will never go back to a DSB and i dont have to worry about the 2 year DSB crash. Plus i was able to kick up my flow alot with having a sand storm. Also zoa's are easier to frag off the bottom then off a rocks.

Love the thread.

The best sps system I had was BB, and one of the worst was a different BB, lol. So many factors to success...just gotta pick what works for you.

I like the look of fine white sand, so I use a thin layer of it. I have a very light fish load in my 90 system and feed sparingly too. I also feed only wet mostly meaty food, rotifers, bit of dt's. Very strong skimming and flow, etc.

I also think nutrient management is easier if you have a tank loaded with larger growing corals than when you first start out with a bunch of frags. Gotta keep those nutrients moving right along....fast in, fast out.

I took my time designing the tank so nothing settles on the floor period. no siphoning necessary.

And Audio...as far as BB looking unnatural..........there are no sandbeds on top of the reef, so SAND is whats unnatural.

I run a dsb and a BB tank.....but when the inevitable time comes that the current sandbed is needing replaced.........it will be getting replaced........with flow. This decision has nothing to do with looks, it has to do with me wanting to bei in complete control of my tank and the envirionment.........with the sandbed having no say in the matter

Are you still taking / accepting new members ? If so here's my application.

I went bare bottom over the weekend. I removed my nasty crushed coral substrate, it was not a pretty sight.

Thanks GSMguy ! I need to do a few more things here soon. First is upgrade my skimmer. I have a small sump, and limited on space available. Also need to get rid of my RDSB in my fuge.

there are plenty of smaller in sump skimmers that kick but these days. and no need to worry about space if you go external.

im planning an upgrade from my so so HOB skimmer to an external Recirculating skimmer soon.

also id consider keeping the RDSB for now they can be really beneficial.

My LFS had a 55 gallon tank that he planted a patch of watermelon zoa's directly onto the tank bottom. He target fed them until they spread like wild fire. He would take a razorblade and slice perfect square patches of them and then replant them across the tank on other areas. Eventually the ZOA's took over the entire bottom of the tank and made a field of watermelon zoa's. It was pretty awesome.

Heres mine still in the build process, I painted the bottom and the back of the glass blue. Aslo i bonded the rock together and silconed it to the glass so i could cut out those crappy looking zip ties.

I started with sand but I got tired of blowing up sand everytime I cleaned the glass or didn't have the powerhead aimed perfectly. I now can go to town with the magfloat and scraper and my two tunze nanos (not shown these are all old pics, 6045 and modded 6025) can be pointed anywhere I want.

I didnt toss the sand though just relocated where it isn't a menace (and made a small 6" DSB in the process).

@stanlalee, nice looking tank. No RDSB needed. It's optional.

Remember the BB motto :
Bare bottom is different than a sandbed because you are relying on immediate exportation instead of delayed.

BB since 96'.. My denitrifier would battle a sandbed anyway.. Besides who wants to move a rock by accident and stir up the sandbed making what I call phosphate soup???

I am almost BB. It takes a lot of waterchanges to get it all out.
