RD3 inlet ideas

I'm about to pull the trigger on an RD3 80w for my 100g reef return pump. I see the slot pipe that RE offers but its 7.5" long and I only have 4.5" in my sump return section. Has any one come up with any creative ideas here or does everyone run the pumps w/o an inlet filter? Thanks all!

I run mine without inlet protection but my sumps are setup in such a way that I don't have issues with critters getting into the return section.

Ok mine is the same way, however i always look for the safest solution in the reef tank world
