250$ Gen2/Pro to Gen3 Pro

I'm trying to decide myself if I should "upgrade" my G1 to a G3 pro, or just buy the G3 pro and try to get a little bit for my G1 later. Not sure how "user friendly" the "upgrade" is for the average user.

I think thats for them to do the work. The pro is 806$, so I would think it would be more cost effective to upgrade.

Didn't the design change for the G3/pro? If so, not sure it would be ideal to upgrade from G1 to G3 then.

That's what I'm thinking. But a good chunk of the cost is the power supply.

I am not sue if you can get the light without the power supply. I think someone drop their light into the tank and cannot get another light without the power supply. I think he end up selling the ballast. I wanted to buy the whole thing and send it back to echotech to got it fix but was advise against this by echotech. I am not sure if he did something to PO echotech or not. It seem in dealing with this reefer I sense that he was not a nice guy.

In reading the specification I think that there is not a great different between a G2 and G3 other than cosmetic. It seem that the G2 Pro is a better light than a G3

No, I didn't mean you could buy the light separate, only that the ballast/driver is the most expensive part of the light. I think the ballast are the same on the g1 and g2.

There has been tons of people already upgrade. You can find the thread title, "Pro G3 Upgrade Path".

I upgraded my G1 to G3 ($175), which has not arrived yet. FedEx has it in limbo somewhere because of the huge snowstorm up in the northeastern part of the US. I also upgraded my G2 to G3 ($150) and I was able to do that upgrade myself. Currently half my tank is lit and does not do me any good to tell whether the colors are better or worse. Having a half lit 48" tank is not cool or worth looking at right now.

I guess if you only have 1 or 2 lights it might be worth it. But I have 4 and for what it would cost I can buy another fixture. Thats just crazy IMO.

Heard a lot of good things about it. If you don't mind spending another few hundreds, I say go for it.

I was thinking of doing the same. What are the big differences that you notice and how long ago did you upgrade.

I upgraded in October. After the acclimation period, I have seen a little better growth in all the corals, while some of the softies really responded favorably.
I wish I would have had the foresight to take before and after pictures.

I did the gen1 to gen3 retro. I can tell a big difference. I have 2 lights on a 120 so I can only do one at a time. It is definitely wrth the 175, IMO!

I got 4 of my G1 to G3 Pro. It seem great. Will see how the anemones and coral looks in a few months. Now I have 4 G3 Pro, 3 G2 and 2 G1. 7 of the lights over my 320 gal and 2 over my 40 gal frag tank (40 gal breeder)

On my 75g reef I run a g2 and a g1 on the right side of my tank and a g3 pro on the left. The g3 holds its own. Becides the fact that I get better coverage out of the 2 radions side by side with shadowing the g3 pro puts out way better spectrum and renders better pigment in coral. The g1 sucks.

I use to run 250w halide +4 t5 bulbs on the left half of my tank and the 2x radion on the right did a way better job for growth and color of my sps corals on my zeovit tank so thats why I added the g3 pro. Amazing light. Having said that Im debating trying pacific sun on my next build.
