I have never really tried AF vitamins but I have some on my shelf so maybe I will give it a go. I'm curious what you notice from it? Also do you using Iodine and Fluorine just to bring out the blues? I've been considering implementing a balling system eventually on my tanks but tried to really simply things for the past few months which has gone very well. Keep up the good work Matt!

I see tanks like Watchguy’s and I want to stop adding everything but at the same time, I am happy with things as they are, so I won’t change anything, I don’t think.. Quote:
I was trying to find my thread on tapatalk and I don’t think it can access page two.. the more I try to use tapatalk, the more I realize it is pretty bad.. BUT, it does allow for free third party hosting so I’ll put up with it! I’ll have some catching up to do around here. How’s your tank doing?

Ok.... so here’s my latest update.. despite good growth from my cheato- I just harvested a bucket’s worth- n continues to sit at around 30.. p had dropped a good bit from .3 to .2. So still high but not as ridiculously high.. I think in another week, n will begin to fall as well..
But even with these high numbers, I keep having to increase the CO2 bubble count and I even increased my kalk dosing. Growth is increasing on many Corals.. So, I’ll post a bunch of close shots and then a bunch of wide shots.. The shot I post every time: My orange passion is on another growth spurt.. here is the uppermost branch which continues to thicken.. These two Corals have completely grown around each other. Fox Flame and a no name. Ice fire and no name. Interesting yellow tipped no name with reddish body.. curious to see this in several months.. Good ol’ pink lemonade Habanero is also growing like a demon.. So is this yellow no name.. could be wolverine but I bought it as just a yellow piece.. Ok! I’ll post some wider shots next.. Some wide shots..
Front centre: Another a bit closer.. Upper left.. A little right of last shot: Upper right. Still sort of right centre.. sort of.. Hmm .. I’ll sneak a couple other shots from the other day.. Jack! No name starting to grow.. Super close up of my other orange passion Artsy fartsy shot of no name. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

good to hear and your latest pics are just incredible. for sure it would be better to get those parameters a bit down but as we can see by your example low po4 and no3 isn´t all that counts!! i think tabatalk works just fine for me my tank... hmmm... after i had a lot of problems with keep the parameters in check due to a lot in my office and all the pre christmas things going on and now i decided to switch over to full triton method. a lot of my friends are running that system and have not to much maintenance and great success!! will post some pictures soon! ps.: maybe i´ll visit Montreal in the upcoming fall 2018 Cheers

Mutt since your growth and colouration is excellent, with those high values of no3 and po4, did you ever consider that those high values are actually favourable for your corals? Looking yours and Joe NY reefs, remembering what has been written on sceptical reefkeeping about po4, reeding Mr Bailing advising po4 concentration of 0.1ppm as optimum values and mainly looking my reef with no3 2.5ppm, po4 hovering between 0.2-0.4 due to Lars syndrome :-) and no ill effect, I wonder if nutrients levels are critical only at the beginning of a reef ,for controlling algae outbrakes, but in an established reef, higher values are actually favourable for all corals?

Happy New Year to you, your household, and your reef.
Your reef is continuing a level of excellency that few attain. I agree with Greg's thinking posted above. Once a reef matures and hits it's healthy, happy place; it seems to tolerate a wide range of conditions. The nutrient level that once made the reef turn brown now brings about the most pure saturated colors. Thanks again for all the pics and knowledge that you passed on in the last year. |

Flo, let me know when you come to Montreal! Don’t come soon, though, it’s currently one of the coldest places on earth... No question triton is working for a lot of people. Will you use an algea fuge? I guess I just don’t know how to navigate tapatalk very well.. anyways, it works for posting pics.. Quote:

The whole nutrient issue is very perplexing. I do believe my nutrient are too high- even if they aren’t really affecting the tank negatively.. although I do have some rust brown spots in the sand which I assume is dinos and this brown stringy funk growing in the frag tank. Will add flow in frag tank.. so even though most of the Corals are doing great with high nutrients, I thinks they probably be growing and looking different/better in lower levels.. Nuisance algae is generally at a low though. I still have a handful of Corals that are not doing well or not growing. Every time I have a period of lower nutrient, more of those dormant Corals seem to wake up. Once awake, however, they continue to grow even when nutrients climb again.. Your point about established reefs being more tolorent of nutrient swings seems like a very good one. There must be something to that.. stable bacterial levels and general microfauna populations must allow the Corals to adapt better to highs and lows.. I still feel that for all around reef happiness, my levels are slightly too high.. Having said that, the real key here is that I am not trying to do anything about it in any big hurry.. I’m going to give it a few more weeks for sure and see if things creep down slowly- I think they will.. My plan, thereafter is to start a low dose of a carbon source.. maybe vinegar or nopox.. not so much as a real nutrient reducer (although, it will have a reducing effect) but just as an added element to the nutrient cycle in the tank..

Thank you! That is one of my pink matrix colonies.. This is an older pic of a different colony from a different Canadian vendor: Couple more close ups from a few months ago.. This pic is of the specific coral you asked about above. One more.. it is quite a beautiful coral and is growing well.. it’ll need some fragging very soon.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Wow Matt, your colours are impressive, wish I could get there.
I have also noticed that these deep colourations are very possible in a higher nitrate and phosphate readings. Great progress- and thanks for sharing!!

Matt as always everything is looking great!
With your levels that high, what do you think contributes to you not having much bad algae? Everytime mine get high, I get this really annoying green turf algae. I wish I could keep my levels maybe a little below yours but high as my corals always look the best then but at the same time green turf algae takes over. Also, how are your levels that high? Are you feeding a ton everyday?

Happy New Year Matt! Your tank keeps looking better and better. I'm not sure I would change anything about your nutrient levels as your tank is looking like a TOTM. I always enjoy stopping in and checking out your beautiful corals and wonderful photography.
