What happened to old tank syndrome

Years ago you would see a fair amount of threads that blamed tank crashes on old tank syndrome. I rarely see anything on this these days. If I remember it had something to do with sand beds not having enough life so after years it would release toxins in the water. Or maybe it was just an excuse when our systems would crash

Perhaps because not many people run deeeeeep sandbeds any more, & many run bare bottoms.

I was thinking about that too. I tried a sand bed a few times in the past but always seemed to have algae problems.

yeh, cyano is a common problem on top of a bed, especially in younger tanks

I ran a DSB for about 10 years and never had any significant problems, but I was very careful to keep the fish load down.

Its still a term thrown around when applicable..
I think people may be more aware of it now and are taking matters into their own hands before just posting on the internet about it..

I ran a deep sand bed in my old tank for 18 years. I also have one in my current tank of 3 years. I have always had a heavy fish load.
