Today must have been my lucky day. Beyond the hell day at work the wife decided to come home for lunch... at which point she called me frantically that the house was smokey...
I raced home and found this. The power strip had a mere 150w max plugged into it. When I came home everything was still powered up through it except that socket... which had a tiny nano power head plugged in. Will be going through electrical tomorrow and finishing up all of the dedicated circuits. I have a bunch of these cheap power strips and want to get rid of them asap. Not exactly sure what happened here but I know this time I was lucky. Don't want to deal with this again.

Holy crap, that is terrifying. So glad that you caught this in time.
Could water have splashed onto the outlet? Strange for it to suddenly do that right?... I think I will have nightmares now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I suppose it could have but I've been pretty careful not to have splashing water with this build. I didn't have bags running because I just added a bunch of pods so maybe something freak happened and it slung enough water to cause the issue. I suspect the power head maybe shorted out and this cheap power strip is weaker than the pump wiring. I may never know the answer to this one...

I just had one do that to me last month. Had my mag 5 pump for my salt water mixing station on it. Was scary but thankfully nothing else was damaged.

Electrical and Controller Updates
I spent the better part of the day finishing up the electrical system. It's all powered on and good to go... 3x 20A and a 15A circuit with a total of 48 outlets. Was able to remove 3 of the temporary power strips. Feels good to be wrapping things up!
I bought the new ReefAngel Star controller and will start to bring that online this coming week. I'm moving the head unit to a new location compared to where my current one resides. I have several expansion modules already including Conductivity, ORP, and Ecotech RF module. I'll build my own heavy duty relay control using a IO expansion module for the displays lighting system since it will be too far away from the head unit and have to high current draw for the normal RA Socket Expansion. We're going to try to data log and see if we can come up with algorithms that would predict if something isn't normal regardless if it's still in acceptable range. Should be an interesting project but is certainly going to be a long term project.

It’s hard to get the smell of burned electronics out of your head once that happens. It’s traumatic. Glad things are worked out though.
Did you end up installing GFCI on the new circuits? I was a little concerned when they installed GFCI in my filtration room but haven’t had any problems yet with them tripping yet. They must have improved the technology. |

Arc faults are a great alternative as well. I just remember hearing that AFCI will prevent a fire and GFCI's will prevent you from getting electrocuted while having a portion of your body in the water. Can't wait to see some new updates.

Yeah, still going strong. Need to make an update to this dusty thread! It’s amazing how little time there is and things change when you have a kid

I actually sold the 6x 20 long aio towers to a fish store. I just didn’t have the time to work on it and seeing the neglected system was depressing. The livestock deserved more.
