AC III DC8 or EB8
can an EB8 be run on AC3 and if so - any advantages?

No, the EB8 uses a different interface. The Apex and newer accessories use an Aquabus interface, basically a modified USB. However, the Apex has backward compatibilty for the legacy accessories.
