green star polyp "Tree"
I know not many people like green star polyps but I thought of an idea today to make a star poly tree. I saw a very branchy live rock today at my lfs and I have an established patch of star polyps in my tank. I took the GSP patch off my rock in little strips and glued them all over the branchy live rock in order for it to grow into the shape of a tree.
has anyone done anything similar to this? if so with what coral and base structure? I'll load pics tomorrow the GSP are hiding from all the rough handling at the moment.

I have some gsp growing on some branching rock. Once it covers the rock it starts to plate out which is kinda cool.

If you grow it out on your sand bed it will make a large sheet that is easy to attach to most anything. On a previous tank I had it growing up the back glass. I thought it made a cool back ground. Sorry no pictures.

Nothing special. It creates a little cove behind that the fish like. But I need to take it out before it spreads everywhere.

Fantastic way to use GSP. Might as well turn it into something creative.

Im definitely thinking of what else I can make out of fast growing encrusting corals and odd structures like the GSP tree

I got some growing down a rock its metallic GSP. The frag I got was huge and on this soft material so I broke it into bits and have it glued to glass. I hope to grow the GSP onto the glass and then use that to make frags.
I love the "chia pet"

I just bought a smallish frag of GSP, its basically just a small purple mat no rock attached. You guys are saying I can just cut that mat up and glue it places? No special fragging involved?

Consider yourself warned though! GSP is extremely invasive and if you glue it to a rock that touches any other part of your aquascape then this coral will likely advance right through your display and overtake anything in it's path! In my opinion, you have to isolate it to an island to fully enjoy it for years. |

I've been trying to get GSP to cover my back glass. Super glued probably 8 patches to it at various times. All but 1 fell off after 4-5 days. Sticks for awhile, sure it's going to hold, then it falls off. lol But the one patch that's stuck for real has been on there about 10 months. It's growing...but mostly downward onto the sand. And as was said, then it just plates out and grows on top of itself.
If anyone has any tips for getting GSP to stick to glass, I'm all ears. I've got it growing on rocks and then laid against the glass..... it still doesn't want to creep up it NEARLY as fast as it does everywhere else. |

I have a gsp island spire going on. Seems to be the only way i can keep it off everything else. Glad to learn I'm not alone in that.

I have had mine on the top of a coral head to try and limit its growth and for the most part it has worked, but these ideas are pretty cool. I might start working on getting them to do this. I might also try yellow colony polyps the same way.
