Chaeto fails?

Has anyone else given up on chaeto and gone back to caulerpa? When I started out with a refugium I used prolifera and then I was convinced that I should use chaeto and I never could get the same results. Fast forward 10+ years and I'm going back to caulerpa, but now I can't get prolifera but I can get my local variety, so I put that in my refugium and it apparently out competes the chaeto. The chaeto is shrinking now but the glass algae in the main tank is lessening as well. So anyone else?
