Mixed reef here. Zoas, LPS, SPS, Sponges, Gorgonians... no leathers or other softies though. My only issue is balancing the flow. Enough for sps but not too much for the lps.

Thats my reason for buying a controler and a powerhead with variable speed as well in case i don't like what the controller is doing or the wave box. Besides a good storms is welcome once and while so every day i'll have tide simulations to clear up any dead spots, and a low flow time for some time as well then a normal flow for the rest of the day. It should please all the resident when and where ever they are. I rather buy my options now ; than see my coral vanish and loose the money that way.

Yes, i have two vortech mp60's and two mp40's controlled via my Profilux running a few different programs throughout the day. But it's still tough because sps love A LOT of flow and lps not so much. So it's still hard to get either to REALLY thrive. It's give and take and compromises. I'm ok with that though... you have to be with a mixed tank.

My mix tank will be more LPS and macro-algae than with sps. I'll have some sps but at very strategic place where their's lots of flow and the Macro like strong current too most of them anyway. So the LPS will have lots of room as well. I just hope i can still make my stalactite like the last time and make my stool go up again from upside down to standing up, that was cool.

Has anybody had long term success mixing SPNPS corals (small polyp non photosynthetic) with light loving SPS and/or LPS? I always imagined that the dissolved organics and planktonic foods needed to keep these NPS alive could foul the water fast & bring on a mean algae outbreak, especially considering the strong lighting these systems require.

Examples might be NPS Gorgonians, Florida Yellow Finger Gorg, Sea Fans, whips, Carnation coral, Sea Pens etc.

Also, what about non coral filter feeders that require high levels of suspended food like feather dusters, coco worms, Christmas tree worms etc? Anyone had success over the years mixing stony corals with NPS animals like this? Maybe this is not practical or advisable as many of these animals are found at very different depths in the wild.

Now their's a mix tank lol. You'd need a dedicated spot feeder i say lol. I don't know.

You're right Mbeaver! A tank like this, even if possible over the long term, would take enormous effort, some pretty good technology or both.

I had a Xmas tree rock for years in my mixed reef. See pic below. I had to move it to a smaller mixed reef because an angel was picking on it.
