Ron and anyone else that can comment,
In the article, he states:

"There is also a fluidized bed filter with coral sand which is 2 m high and 30 cm across. In my experience such a filter makes the water even clearer."

What are the thoughts behind using a fluidized bed of coral sand and how does it make the water even clearer? In the USA, we use fluidized filters as biological filters/ nitrifying filters with an end result of nitrate.
Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

Its working like a sand filter. The coral sand holds very small particles which are free in the water. The watercurrency goes slow through it.
Ive seen two tanks here with a sand filter and indeed the water goes clearer for sight.

Ron.

Ok, so its used as a mechanical filter and the sand itself isn't tumbling like a regular fluidized bed sand filter. Does the water still enter the bottom of the reactor and exit the top of the vessel?
I'm assuming then that once in awhile you can increase the flow through the filter to fluidize it to flush out the particulate matter?
Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

You´re right. I have a picture of it. No tumbling at all and 1/3 filth.

Ron.

Un****ing believable! Is this a private tank? In a commercial showroom? Public office? How many gallons is it? How much did the tank itself cost? How much has been invested so far? Totally awesome.

Amazing reef display! one of best aquariums I have seen in 25 years in the hobby. Only aquarium I have seen, lately, that really represents a true living reef in captivity. Beautiful rock layout. Natural placement of corals. Breath-taking sps, photographed as they really are. Love the Assessor Flav and Helfrichi. It's so refreshing to see an honest, no photoshop, no-nonsense, dropdead gorgeous reef!!

Ron.

The sand DOES tumble. You don't see it in the picture, and even when you look at the filter from some distance, you also don't see it. When you look closer, you see it tumbles. The sand level also decreases by abou 5-8 cm when the intake pump is shut off.

The idea behind this filter is that biological filtration takes place in there. Don't ask me why, but the owner thinks that this is beneficial to the system. He also claims to see that the water became clearer since this filter was installed.
