Not unless you want to manually rinse all the grunge out of it first - about 10 lbs at a time. Once you stop flowing water over it old tank sand quickly turns septic and a huge source of pollution in a new tank unless you clean it all first. Same happens with a deep sand filter. Can be done but takes a while to get it to run clear.

A few hours of rinsing or $200 worth of new sand, unless you go barebottom.

Nice thread. I love the DD tanks. I have the 200 DD and ran out of space fast. I could only imagine the 300 must be crazy!

Your stand is great too. I wouldn't have any worry with that. My marineland stand is about 5/8 particle board all the way around.

That is some great tile work. I would just get new sand and call it a day. No need to mess up perfection.

I personally don't like the look but it seems easier, if you have the filtration for it.

I am giving it a serious thought, after 10 years of using a DSB and after the break down. it was the worst smelling thing I ever smelled, it stunk up the whole house, like someone threw a stink bomb. I believe, even though I was keeping my params in check, it was harder and harder to keep it stable, I believe it was due to the DSB and stagnant areas I couldn't get to and due to the fact my Tank was to jammed packed. Im going raised structures this time with pillars and have most of my live rocks off the bed as much as I can. Maybe use only an inch of crush coral.

Rob- I like the look of sand but also worried about the long term effects of a DSB. I only put enough sand in to be 3/4-1" thick. It blows around, the sand sifter spits it and moves it where he wants it too. Occasionally I just rake it back to where I want it. I'm happy with it so far. You can always siphon it out later.

Rock work is sweet! Did you use any rods to hold it in place?
How did you keep your parameters in check on the bowfront without a skimmer?
The video shows a large amount of fish, did you do light or heavy feedings? What was your waterchange schedule like?

Looking forward to this new build!!!

No rods, just a little bit of Hydraulic cement, it hardens fast and holds like super glue. I kept in check with a 2 part doser, I dosed Alk every hour for 12 min from midnight to Noon, Calcium was dosed every hour for 9 min from noon to midnight. Dosed mad manually, when needed. I did heavy feeding, and did water change every 3-4 weeks, sometimes every 2 weeks. Ran GFO, BP and carbon in the Fluval. I cleaned the fluval every 2 weeks and ran carbon 2 weeks on 2 weeks off.

Thanks to velrui (Ernie) I got this bad boy in. Now its time to get down and dirty. Had to take the trim off the top, smashed it from the first time putting the tank on it. Word of advise, Always put the trim on last, especially with a big tank!

Good stuff Rob. How the progress coming along?

Did you decide on the BB thing? No matter what you decide to do, are you going to lay down some starboard type material?

No Starboard, I might just laydown 1" of sand. I need to accommodate my melanarus wrasse. I have seen him in the stock tank at night trying to burry himself under the rocks. I was going to go the cutting board route and went to cuttingboardcompany.com and was quoted over $400 for a custom cut, a little steep..

that spot for the tank seems rather closed off from the house with that mini corner wall! hopefully you're reinforcing the floor under the tank!

go with a 1" sand base. it give look, and stay clean. mine is purely for looks. bare bottom to me is so unnatural, and its hard to keep wrasses if you do.

good luck!

It will be a snug fit, the floor is solid concrete slab, so no worries there. Yes I have decide on 1" sandbed. After seeing a 3"DSB after 10 years, will never do it again.

Great video. How did you smash the trim on the tank? Looks good and normal to me.

There was only 2 of us when brought it home, and when we took it off the truck and tried to fit it on the stand between the trim which was measures exactly at 72.5" that surrounds the bottom trim of the tank, we couldn't do it, it was too heavy. So we had to angle it and laid it on the top trim and smashed it.

Prepping up my wall behind the tank and in the laundry room which is the room behind the tank. Doing an automatic water changer which will be plumbed in the garage. not going to be fully automatic, will need to turn on and off a few ball valves. All electoral plugs and Apex Control will be mounted in the Laundry room and away from moisture.
