Question sushi nori vs marineland nori

I have read that store bought sushi nori is okay to feed marine fish. I just want to make sure before I put it in the tank. I bought some toasted nori from an asian food store and it claims to have no additives. BUT..... there is a packet that came with it that claims to remove moisture. Should I be worried, or just feed the fish. Thanks.

Jim

In my opinion you should just feed em. Honestly, I have had customers at the LFS I worked at come and tell me they've fed table scraps from their own dinners to their fish. Seriously, people that feed their fish steak and chicken. Fish love to eat almost anything, and I don't imagine that sushi nori is something that they'll discriminate against. It's all just seaweed anyhow.

Thanks. I understand that it is okay for them eat nori, but I am concerned about possible chemicals that may be present in the packed that came with the seaweed. The marineland type I normally buy does not come with such a packet.

I use the "Sushi Party" toasted seaweed from Wal-Mart with no problems. The stuff I use also comes with the dessicant packet in it.

Sweet. According to the packet, it only contains toasted nori, no salt. Thanks guys. I'm gonna feed my fish now

I don't see a problem with it.. If it is safe for human consumption, especially with the FDA the way it is, Ithink it would be safe for your tank.

Mmmm...I haven't had kimchee in years! There is no difference in the product. The packets are to keep moisture from building up in the pouch which can cause mold to grow and spoil the nori. I get mine from Nori Direct for $8 per 100 sheets. Excellent deal, and my fish chow on it.

The sole purpose of those silicate packets is to absorb moisture (H2O). They will not add anything to the nori chemically.

I have been using it for almost 2 yrs now. So much cheaper!

BTW I have about a 8" Naso that is super thick. I have had him on this for over a year. He will not eat anything but that. No meaty foods, flakes, or pellets. Just the Nori....

One thing that is the difference it the way its processed, unfortunately most sushi nori is toasted or roasted which takes most of the nutrience out so yes your fish will eat it but they are getting more empty calories than anything. When buying nori look for dried which has more to it, if you ever get a chance use both, just take a smell and you'll notice the difference. You can get sushi dried nori, just have to look, I have found most organics versons to be dried. Just something to think about.

Store bought Nori is just fine - my only issue with it is that it breaks up in the tank within ~10 minutes.

I switched to whole leaf stuff from my local natural foods place... amazingly - it's the same exact thing as Julian Sprungs SeaVeggies.. except you get twice as much for half the price. Check out "Dulce", it's red and packed with good vit's... all my fish -from Tangs to my Clowns and Kupang Damsel would go NUTS for this stuff.. and it would last all day on the clip.

Best of luck,
John.
