What Do You Think? Life Expectancy Of An Impeller
How long do you think is a reasonable life span for a pump's impeller? How often should you expect to have to replace an impeller in a reasonably good brand pump? Assuming normal maintenance?

2-4 yrs
Realistically I don't see any reason a quality impeller should last the life of the pump. If they are made from a quality construction, a ceramic impeller should outlive the more complicated components of a pump IMO.

It really does depend on the pump and inherent quality. I had an Iwaki that I ran for 20 years continuously and the impeller was still going strong (so was the pump, for that matter, but I replaced it proactively). I've got 10 year old panworld pumps on the original impeller and have no reason to think they will fail anytime soon. Conversely, when I ran an ASM skimmer, the sedra pump always seemed to need a new impeller. The magnet would start to swell, and it would bind up.

Thanks guys, super helpful.
So if an impeller failed after less than 12 months, would you see that as a problem? This being a reasonable quality impeller, in the range of $80 (for the impeller only)? Assuming it was being cleaned frequently and everything. Perhaps a misaligned magnet off balance from the start? |
