Lemonpeel Mimic Tang or Chocolate Tang
I would like to know what the difference is between the lemonpeel mimic tang, and the chocolate mimic tang. I know there is a difference, but I can't find pictures of them in the adult stage to compare. As juveniles, I can see that they are both yellow, but the lemonpeel mimic has blue around his eyes.
I am thinking about getting a chocolate tang for my 90 gallon tank, and while I was looking at different sites with pictures of them I ran across this lemonpeel mimic tang. They are both pretty, so I'm trying to decide which one I like the best. Does anyone have either of these fish, and do you have pictures? Thanks!! |

Ok, I laughed at TMC just shopping the blue highlights out, messing with darkness and contrast, and saying it's a chocolate tang, when it's the same photo of the same fish in the lemonpeel mimic tang photo .
I'm pretty sure they both look close enough in adulthood where it doesn't matter all that much which one you choose. From a few photos I've seen it looks like the lemonpeel mimic might retain a little more of their yellow highlights. Not sure if that's true for all. |

That's pretty funny...lol. So then they are practically the same fish? Does anyone own one and have an opinion of one or the other?

Acanthurus pyroferus IS:
lemonpeel mimic tang chocolate tang They are the same fish, and I think they are one of the best, for size, temperament and beauty, both as a juvenile and an adult. juvenile adult There is another mimic tang that resembles Eibl's angel when it is a juvenile, this is Acanthurus tristis, Indian Ocean mimic tang: juvenile adult

Same species, but sometimes location dictates color. Since they mimic different things I'm just assuming they're from different areas. One might have brighter adult colors (I don't know, that's what I was wondering). Kind of like how Indo-Pacific harlequin tusks aren't as bright as Australian harlequins, even though they're the same species.
