Here's a CNN news report about it. It was neat to read they used "Instant Ocean" to make thier water. Oh yea, they used tap water also, from what I read...no RO...

http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science...w.ga.aquarium/

GPB had a video of it:
http://www.gpb.org/public/tv/highlights.jsp?hlid=5676

Thanx for the pics. They were cool.

My daughter lives in Atlanta and has gone a number of times already. She says that even pictures don't do it justice, although I bet she hasn't seen yours yet. An absolutely awesome collection of pictures. I can't wait for airline tickets to go down a little so that I can go visit. I will be first in line when they open the day I get there!!!!!

Awesome pictures.
Those were Tibetan Buddhist prayer flags, not authentic laundry.
Unless you were joking, then that was funny.

Dumb question, but how do they keep the glass clean in the shark tank? I suppose they employ some brave divers?

The whale sharks are siphon/filter feeders. They aren't a threat. The video they had of the whale sharks eating was quite impressive. As for the hammerheads, they're well fed, I'm sure. Additionally, I've been to other aquariums with sharks and divers. They just keep a spotter on hand, and play terrotorial tactics, just like in the wild. At the other aquarium, the spotter had a "T" made out of PVC. When the shark got sort of close, he'd hold out the "T" to make the shark aware of his "personal space."

I'm glad everything made sense, and at least some of the magnitude of this place translated across. It's hard to judge how well I've conveyed the granduer, when I was there, so I know what I'm looking at. I really appreciate the objective comments. Thank you very much.

As for the surge, I don't know. Unfortunately, behind-the-scenes tours aren't available for a few more weeks. I was desperately hoping to see that. There's so many things there that are of interest to me.

From http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/visit...ceneTours.aspx
  • Discover the magic of a mangrove forest.
  • Enjoy a special view of the top of the coral reef exhibit and its many colorful inhabitants.
  • Learn how we create salt water while viewing the filtration system at the top of our massive coral reef.
  • View how we make large waves at the top of the reef gallery.
  • Learn and observe how we grow our corals, jellies and other interesting animals.
  • View the top of the largest ocean pool in North America and observe the world’s largest fish, the whale shark.
  • Take home a souvenir photo of you at the top of the ocean pool.
  • View the husbandry commissary and how we make the food for the animals.
  • Visit our modern vet clinic and learn how we operate on fish.

For you maintenance/equipment nerds, here's a shot of the big tank's surface. I'm presuming this is how they cool it. There were several of these areas that looked like a helicopter overhead.

As stated above, the behind the scenes tours are not yet available. However, there was video playing at the big window, and some of it showed the whale sharks eating. They had several pounds of krill, and other such meaty foods, all in a large scoop/bucket. For some reason, I'm thinking they fed 16.5 lbs at a time, twice a day. Anyway, they put this bucket in front of the shark, and he starts this huge vacuum, sucking in what must be dozens of gallons of water within a couple seconds. The food, of course, gets sucked right in with it. It was quite amazing to see the aquatic "black hole" into the shark's mouth.

That was an amazing photo journey you took us on. Thank you. The magnitude of the displays were conveyed well and I'm sure it's even more breathtaking in person.

Thanks again,
Russ
