Thoughts on using some coarse wet 'n' dry sand paper as a substrate for an angled trough type scrubber?

No problem, the only bad question is the one not asked!

critique my ATS scrubber plz:
Ok ATS guys made a DIY up flow scrubber. started out very slow in growth. rised some slime off once then just left it be for 2 weeks with light on most of the time ( 4 red 660nm LEDS) this is how it looked: in sump: http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...2bde3b280a.jpg turf growing on glass: http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c27410bc29.jpg how it looks when I took it out for 1st real cleaning: http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...2bafcbb1cf.jpg whit i got from cleaning: http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...39d80ec02c.jpg how I left it. you can see the ring of growth.. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...45d752e2c5.jpg no after cleaning back in sump it went for 7 days 6 days of 24/7 lighting and the last day I turned off lights. ( was gonna let it grow for a few more days but then realized it was a week since cleaning so went ahead.) here is where we are at: sorry for the large photos tapatalk loaded them large for some reason.) http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...6c2a5f820c.jpg before cleaning: you can see the ring of growth. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...bb4b5fb80b.jpg and after cleaning. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...30e1cd929d.jpg looks like the circle of growth has expanded. & i am happy of the turf I got in 6 days. a good hand full. so my questions are: think I am running to much lighting schedule? what are your guys lighting schedule? 18 on 6 off? how can I get the roots of the turf to expand to all of growth area? on average how often do you guys clean your ATS? what happens if the air bubbles are a bit off the screen ( that might be my problem ) any and all feedback is welcome! |

Nice upflow, and great first growth. Don't need to change anything if it's doing that well to start with. The growth will spread by itself. Just clean it when full.

Growth is great for a first two weeks. If you post pics of your tank, and what you are trying to do, it would be easier to recommend things.

I would also like to add that I am setting up a refugium, have already ordered Chaeto macro algae, I am in search for some dead rocks and sand right now to fill the refugium.

I don't know what the hold up was on "revealing" this because I don't see any new publications in USPTO or WIPO.

Hey all, following the great detail and advice here I constructed my first ATS a few months ago. Seemed to work great, got some great growth. This is the kind of growth I was getting:
Eventually I got the Algae problem in my display tank totally under control and around the same time growth on my ATS seemed to stop. I didnt do any cleanings b/c I believe its seasoned. So I let it go for a few weeks. This is what it looks like today: Besides the color the stuff feels like hard jelly or silicone. Kinda like a jellyfish. Is this what happens when there's not enough nutrients to feed the ATS? __ __
