Canister and sump set up possible?? and auto filter cleaning

I am new to the hobby but is it possible to have a canister filter and sump running on the same tank.

This is coming from someone who successfully ran a 60g cube for 22 years using a dual biowheel HOB and a canister. The canister served as a place for some biological filtration media and lots of carbon. It was a royal PIA to take care of and frequently got ignored. The soft corals didn't mind that so much, but SPS were pretty much impossible to keep.

The question is "Is it possible?" not Is it preferable?" There are endless possibilities of more "ideal" configurations. But ideal is subjective.

I'm curious as to what the "auto filter cleaning" is?

If you have a sump, there is no need for a canister filter. Leave the fresh water filters, in fresh water.

Canisters are awesome at mechanical filtration, which is not as important in a reef tank. They are also pretty good media reactors, but that's easy to do in a sump.

The ability to remove dissolved organics is is not a quality found in a canister. You can do a much better job with a skimmer, but it doesn't mean canisters can't be used..... just depends on the case.

I have one and only softies. It is a pain to clean every week. I wound up just using it as a filter using Matrix. I have another HOB I use for carbon and filter. I also have an HOB skimmer. Softies ok but not growing much. Just got new lights. All water params are perfect.....

THe issue is the up and down of nitrate levels between and following cleaning. If you could replace the filter medium every 3 hours, you could probably skip cycling altogether---and spend a bundle on filter medium and wages of a servant sitting by to do just that---but it is a lot easier to cycle the tank and let rock and sand bacteria do the job entirely. Filter medium builds nitrate levels as it gets dirty.

And if there are two things a marine environment (particularly a reef) does not like---it's change, and nitrate above 5.

Ammonia 0. No filters: lps tank. Alk and cal won't rise if mg is low. Current Tank Info: 105g AquaVim wedge, yellow tang, sailfin blenny,royal gramma, ocellaris clown pair, yellow watchman, 100 microceriths, 25 tiny hermits, a 4" conch, 1" nassarius, recovering from 2 year hiatus with daily water change of 10%.
