go to the DIY section, and plug in your dimensions, very simple to make and very reliable |

i need to build one too .. with the GARF site, does anyone have better pics?
do the top 5 smaller 2x4s need to go UNDER the 72" long pieces or screwed on the inside? and from the side view, do the 8 2x4s go under the 72" long pieces or get screwed from the side? if it was a canopy, i wouldnt care too much... but since it needs to support 800lbs, i cannot mess it up! |

Before I provide the design I will be using, do you intend to have a sump, if so what size? Do you want it to be a single span open in the middle or do you want a leg in the middle for doors?
While GARF is all well and good, I prefer to do my own engineering.

i don't think i will use a sump... i want to, but i don't know how to build one! unless you can provide those instrustions too?
i think i will need a leg for doors.. if i do get a sump, it at most will be a 10 or 20g tank... the tank itself is 150g |

When it comes to a stand with cupboards under it I hate having a center brace. It stops you from easily placing sumps, equipment, and working in it. I built a carrying beam in the front of mine on 4x4 jacks at each end. My carrying beam is 2 6x6's nailed together on their edge and then mounted onto the two 4x4's at each end. I now have an open front and man do I love it!
Take a look: http://www.masns.ca/forum/showthread.php?tid=2326 |

Justin James, Don't you mean two 2X6s spaning the front gap?
That would be my way of building it just because its alot less hassle and alot easier to access everything thats under the tank.

Structural lumber, none of that glued together stuff. Pick good straight, knot-free pieces and you should be good to go.

Pine frame and skin it with Red Oak? I know it sounds pricey but a reefer here says he built an oak stand and canopy for $50 for a 75G tank...
I guess pine would be ok but unless it is finished in some type of urethane or nice veneer, they tend to look pretty cheap no matter how nice of work you do.

I have built quite a few stands and have come up with a few different designs. I made the stand calculator for GARF but wanted to make something a little nicer. Here is my latest. I have built 3 stands using it...
http://www.idahoreefs.org/Tank/BuildLargeStand_3.asp It has a frame and a facade that covers it. I build the frame using MDF then paint it with epoxy paint. I have built the facades out of both oak and mahogany. Thanks, Scott

A stand for a standard 180 gallon tank would use 4 sheets of MDF which runs about $27 per sheet. The facade would take around 40 board feet of lumber. I usually buy one and a quarter times the amount of lumber due to waste. So without hardware or finish, it would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $250 made out of MDF and oak.
Thanks, Scott
