which kit did ya buy ?
one of the normal kits comes with an appropriate amount of mag to be used with the calcium and magnesium bags and you mix the small bag of mag with 20oz of water. these kits are made for maintaining your levels once you already have them up where you want them. http://www.twopartsolution.com/index...&products_id=5 the starter package is different . often when you are first staring you need a lot of mag to get the levels back up from where they are. For this reason we include enough to make a full gallon of mag solution (5 cups of mag chloride and 3 cups mag sulfate) http://www.twopartsolution.com/index...products_id=71 the directions are mainly based around the portioned kits but also include directions for the bulk packaged items. http://www.twopartsolution.com/index...in_page=page_4 |

well ya don't "need" it .
main reason we offer it is because it often takes a lot of magnesium to raise the levels to 1300. We don't want to see people have to use most of the smaller magnesium packages in the kits just to get the levels up. |

nah, it's not useless : )
Think about it . you can dilute the bag of magnesium on 20oz of water or in one gallon of water , it is still the same amount of magnesium in that jug . Normally when you are done with a gallon of alkalinity and calcium you would add the whole 20oz container of magnesium . instead you are going to add the full gallon that you made . The only difference is it has more water and the water will evaporate in the tank : ) |

so when it comes time, empty the whole gallon of mag in there. you prolly evaporate a gallon a day so the extra water is no big deal . BTW i don't think anyone should just go pouring anything in the tank when they don't know what they are doing and you are wise to question it but hes right in the fact that it it would prolly be OK to add the whole thing now and test where you are at. If you test now and it reads less than 1000 PPM mag then i would just add the whole thing now and test again the next day : ) |

use this calculator to find out how much alkalinity and calcium you need to add to get to the proper levels. shoot for 7-11 dKH (alk) and 450ppm (calcium) http://twopartvideo.com/calculator/tps_calculator.html after that you just maintain these levels with daily additions. at the bottom of this page you can see how much to start using every day . http://www.twopartsolution.com/index...in_page=page_4 . when you completely empty a full gallon of alk and a full gallon of calcium mix another package of mag up with 20oz of water and pour it in. Your tank doesn't use near as much magnesium as it does calcium and alkalinity. BTW you are both right , it would be stupid to add a whole gallon of something to your tank because some stranger said so. Bebo is right because he know that if you had not been maintaining magnesium before it would be low and the diluted full gallon would never be enough to raise it to dangerous levels . |
