Exclamation Clam sex!

My 10" T. derasa is blowing large puffs of "smoke" every couple of minutes. I expect the skimmer to go nuts anytime now and I changed all 60+ gallons of my new SW last night So far the T. maximas and T. squamosa in the tank seem unaffected. Wish me luck

Um.. I dont think it "takes too (baaaby )". Clouds would be sperm, i think. Egg release can be triggered with an increase in temp, but i dont know about sperm.

whoa this sounds... weird.

It is my understanding (and I could well be wrong) that sperm release is triggered by another clam releasing eggs. In the wild a "female" will release her aggs and the other clams will release sperm, then another "female" will release her eggs and the males will again release sperm and so on until all "females" have released eggs.

Note, Tridacnids are hermaphrodites and a clam is male when it matures, once it reaches a certain size depending on species, it will develop female sex organs but not lose its male organs.

Firechild,
Your are right on. On the clam farms to induce sperm release a clam or clams that are mature are removed from the water and are let to sit in the sun for acouple hours. Then they are put back into the vats or tanks. This triggers the release of sperm. They also can be induce with a drug call sheratonen. Spell checker is missing!!!! A RC member has succesfully done this!

Oh... I thought it was eggs that were triggered by the increase.
