BOBS PLAN OF ACTION! will it work?

SOOOO, my main man is sending me one of these cool lil skimmers
its a D&D Typhoone
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...m?pcatid=13910

im really stoked. i have some good plans for this, and just wanted to run it by yall.

i think i may want to get another small fish, to help my firefish with the Pod pop.

Right now im really pushin the limits of bio-load, and i have a minor deitritus issues due to the lack of any sort of deitritus expulsion (i.e. filter socks.)

i curently have one of these

http://www.aquariumguys.com/skilterfilter.html

soo, im planning on figuring a way to remove the skimmer column from my current skilter, drill a hole in the side or bottom and plumb the typhoone into it.

Reason being, id like to tie a filter sock off in the skilter box where ive tied the typhoone in.

this way i can stir up the detritus, and remove it via filter sock.
Soo a few questions now.

Is this gonna work like it does in my head?

any better ideas?

any problems in over looking?

anything?

thanx in advance yall. any feedback is great

I've had a Typhoon but never used it. But I do know how they work and you could have an issue. The output tube of the Typhoon has a cap that is designed to apply adjustable flow restriction that sets the water height in the skimmer. You need to make sure the sock isn't restricting the flow.

What might work better is to use one of the filter pads in the skilter box so the water exits the Typhoon into the box, then pass through the pad on the way out to the tank.

I have a Typhon on my QT and it does a fair job. Its return is a bit intrusive into the tank as Grim states. It also seems to require a bit more ongoing adjustment than I'd like and the adjustments are all made by reaching into the tank and turning the cap on that return.

Final comment...it has no built-in collection cup which is good news and bad news. The good news is that you really don't have to worry about it overflowing (a big problem with the Coralife Superskimmer 65). That leads to the bad news in that you end up having a tube running down to a separate collection vessel which may can be unattractive...

I think I'd keep the skilter running as mechanical filtration with filter pad and (if desired) carbon or resin chemical filtration.

Unfortunately neither of these devices does much to keep detritus from settling. That can be economically performed with rotating powerheads or a SQWD or even a sand-sifting goby.
