OT: Sweet Deal on the PS3 at Wal-Mart!

Given that $100 at Wal-mart is essentially as good as cash, we can only imagine how titillating this offer may seem for Blu-ray holdouts. Announced today, the mega-retailer will be offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of any Blu-ray player from June 8th through 14th -- and yes, Sony's PlayStation 3 is included. In case this wasn't enough to maybe-possibly get the general public to actually pay attention to the format, Wally World will also sell "select" BD titles for $15 starting on the 8th. Since the format war ended earlier this year, we've seen report after report proclaiming that Blu-ray adoption just wasn't taking off here in America, but with a theoretical net price now close to $200 (albeit for a few days only), we can certainly see the masses taking notice at long last.

Can you use it to pay for the player...or do you pay for the player and then get a $100 gift card?

I'm guessing you have to pay for the player first...but then you have a hundo to spend on games/movies/controllers....

Cool, thanks Tony. What's the "best" PS3 to get? 40GB? 60GB? What do you use the memory for, anyway?

Best buy is also offering this deal. Some people might want the BB gift card instead.

For me the 40 was plenty, but I've heard rumors of games being available as a download. So I dunno...if it's not much of a price change i'd get the 60....a lot of the games have downloadable content also (new maps, songs etc)

Since they are upgrading the 40GB soon hopefully, there is not much difference. The orginal 60GB - if you can find it - is still the best. Offeres full backwards capabilites, memory card slots, and wireless card. The 40GB currently can not play PS2 games, but they are supposedly upgrading that. As far as the space goes some games install on the hard drive and you can download games, etc... and save them to the hard drive. Personally I bought the 20GB cause the hard drive is VERY easy to upgrade. I threw a 150GB in there for about $75...

Good Point

Do you know what the max size harddrive you can put in the PS3?

250GB from what I hear... But I dont know that this is even true. Most likely you will only be limited by the max partion size on that type of partition which is 2TB.

There are other differences between the versions besides just the size of the hard drives....

If you want one that has slots for memory sticks youll have to go 60G or 80G. The same goes for USB ports, the 40 is USB 2.0 X 2, the 60 and 80 are USB 2.0 X 4.....

The 20GB wasnt wireless and theyre as discontinued as the 60GB model....

I assume they will play regular DVD's and music CD's too? Anyone try MP3's or mpg/avi formats? I could replace our DVD player with this...

What kind of cables do you use to connect to your tv's? Video only, I would run the audio to a receiver.

I grabbed the 80 gig a while back. It plays the PS2 games I have, but not as well as I'd like. Battlefront 2 locks up on me just about every time I try to play a 2 player game. PS2 Madden 08 plays just fine. I wish I would have gotten the 60 gig version that included the actual PS2 hardware (supposedly, the 60 gig version plays PS2 games flawlessly, but I'd still like confirmation from someone that has the 60 gig on that one). But all things considered, I'm happy with the 80 gig. I won't be buying any more PS2 games anymore anyway, so it's not that big of a deal.

Theres very few things it wont play. DVD-Audio and FLAC are the only two things I can think of. It can play streaming audio and video, divx, xvid, mp3, etc. Its pretty much a media center.

As to PS2 compatability, there were 2 main chips in the ps2, the graphics core, and the infinity engine chip. The 60gb has both. The 80gb has one, and emulates the other. The 40gb has neither.

I love mine, and I dont even own any ps3 games yet, just all PS2 games (no problems yet on any of my games...80gb). It really is a neat machine.

Glad I already have my PS3... Wal-Marts make me want to puke. Last time I will ever be in one was for the PS2 launch... it's my one long running "New Year's resolutions", if you will.

But definitely a good deal, for those that can step foot in those cult grounds, and have yet to get their hands on a PS3...

And this summer is when the better PS3 games will be coming out... so the timing couldn't be better there. The MGS4 edition PS3 bundle sounds pimp, and it comes with the DualShock 3 controller, ya know.

I'll take this with a huge grain of salt, considering I just heard that it hit a (yet another) snag.

What's "home"?

Is the wireless on the PS3 good enough to stream a movie from a computer? Or is audio really the extent of the data transfer?

For those interested in this offer. I was just on a news forum that said the sale was this week. I checked online and sure enough, you can get the $100 online with a PS3 purchase.
