Seaweed in Sump/Refugium

Would the live seaweed that I collect from the ocean help in removing nitrates if I have some in the refugium? I currently have chaetomorpha in there along with some caluerpa. There are the large seaweeds but I've found some smaller pieces that would fit in my refugium. Has anyone used it? Thank You
