Bulkhead?

I am adding a 10 gallon aquarium to my system as a refugium. I am told I need to install a "bulkhead". Explain to me what a bulkhead does. How does it fit into the drilled hole and stay there? Like silicon caulk or something? Does it have threads to put a pipe on it with?

it prevents leak when you have a pipe going through the glass.
buy bulhkhead first than put a hole in aquarium.
