Cyanobacteria- syphon it or leave it?

I just changed the lights on my refugium from a few years old flourescent bulb to my old 36" 150w 14k de MH fixture. I got a red slime bloom on the sand bed. Should I let nature take it's course or syphon it out when I do a water change tomorrow?

Siphon it out in my opinion. It may come back since th new lighting must have given it quite a boost but siphoning is a worthwhile step to take.

Break out the siphon. I personally use a doubled-up women's nylon and siphon it into the nylon (in the sump) when I don't want to waterchange at the same time...

Yaeger, I was wondering when you were gonna start running into the new tank algae blooms. How long are you oficially up and running now? Have you had any of the other blooms? Green slime? Brown slime? Hair? Bryopsis? et al?

Why do you have to go and say that?? Shhhh... Now it's gonna all pop up out of the wood work!

I have been lucky thus far. I haven't had any algae blooms, unless you considder this cyanobacteria a part of one. Although I relate it to the refugium light upgrade. The tank has been running for 110 days as of today. My two diamond fobies seem to be getting only the fresh sand that is around and under the cyano. I have a tigertail cuke in there that is fairly useless. I think that next week I will be getting a queen conch.

I syphoned it all out tonight. I thought that it was a fluffy layer on top of the sand. Instead, it was a thick layer that came up in sheets when I was syphoning it. No wonder the gobies didn't want to have anything to do with it!!

I had a break out of cyanobacteria as well. My tank is very established and the only thing I have changed recently has been adding a small refugium (sand, rubble, macro-algae). As of now there is no light on the fuge, (its ordered, should be here on Tuesday). Is the fuge the reason I had the outbreak of cyanobacteria?

It is possible that detrius is accumulating there. If the rubble is new rock it could have die off as well.
