I think a skimmer is much more helpful than a refugium. In my opinion the nutrient export/reduction capability of a skimmer is going to exceed that of a refugium. Nutrient export in a fish only tank (I think) is more important than some of the other benefits a refugium provides (such as increased water volume, pod production etc).

Yeah a skimmer is more important on a FO tank. A fuge would only do good but it is no replacement for a good skimmer.

If I had to choose btwn one or the other, then definitely a skimmer.
Yes, you can run both.

Ran a skimmerless tank for six yrs on chaeto only (no sw changes, either). Downside was discolored water since I didn't use any carbon media and main display looked like a giant refugium, not too appealing to look at, but it does it's job well. Low fish bioload is key, too.

Not saying it's better than a skimmer, but I'm proof that it can be done w/ a FO tank. Now, I run BOTH and recommend it!
