bulkhead question

hey
i bought some 2inch bulkheads for drain on my new tank and the place i bought them didn't sell strainers for them so i'm looking for a way to cover them up i thought about sliding the pvc though them and caping the end, then drilling some holes but i don't think that will be to effective.

also will the fittings leak if there not cemented in.

thanks

If these are for drains you will want to build standpipes such as Durso or Stockman. You can find directions for both with a quick search.

Thats why I use only thread thread bulkheads and putty stick type thread sealants, no leaks even after 5+ years. In fact no leaks on my swimming ool pump which was installed the same way in 1983!

For a strainer, yes a caped piece of PVC pipe with holes drilled in it will work. Actually will work better than most common commercial strainers since you can give more area for the water to flow through.

But with that said depending on what you are doing with the drains you might want standpipes of some type.

I prefer standpipes anyway, that way if for some reason your overflow fails toward the bottom and you lost electicity, your entire tank wouldn't flood out through your sump. Just one more safety mechanism to at least keep an acceptable amount of water in the tank itself.

the drian holes are 4 inches from the top of the tank,i'm looking at doing something like your common pet store does for drains.and the returns will be plumbed back over the top of the tank.i'm thinking about using a spraybar return and inductors in the top corners
