Whats a good algae eater tang other then kole and yellow?
Other then the kole tang and yellow tang, what is another good algae eater? I was considering a foxface, but I don't like the fact that they are venomous. I am upgrading to a 180g very soon and eventually even bigger. I am considering an orange shoulder tang? Hippo would be nice since I don't have a lot of blue, but they are to prone to ich, anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

How about a lavender tang? Mine even eats grape caulerpa! Here's a pic after I first got him, he's filled out and colored up a little more since he moved in a couple months ago.

My kole doesnt seem to touch to much algae. The yellow is a pig tho. I'm leaning towards a powder blue, hippo (both ich prone) or a chocolate mimic or orange shoulder. Problem is both of those two are yellow as juvi's and probably wouldn't get along with my yellow. That's a nice tang, how big to they get? The tomini is in the same family as the kole correct? I'd rather have 3 different species.

The tomini, kole and lavender are all in the Ctenochaetus family so would likely not get along in anything but the largest of tanks. I wouldn't have recommended the lavender if I'd know you already had the kole, I thought you were looking for an alternative not a tank mate.

The yellow and kole are not definites. Ultimately when I get my 180 setup, I want three tangs, each from a different genus. I'd have to QT the tang first so that will be done as the 180 is cycling. Any other suggestions? I love the juvi chevrons, but as adults not so much, plus I thought they were in the same genus as the kole.

My scopas and kole are constantly grazing. The hippo, not so much. He supervises
But I have those three and they get along great. I took the same approach, one of each genus. Seems to have worked well. |

Scopas is a Zebrasoma genus though right? I already have a yellow unfortunately. I am looking for something other then Zebrasoma and Ctenochaetus genus. It will make mixing tangs easier. I know a lot of acanthurus are pretty aggressive though. The hippo is in another genus, but doesn't seem to be a big algae grazer, and is also very ich prone.

Does it have to be a tang?
You could look at Blenny, or Dorf Angel. Coral Beauty or Flame Angel are good grazers |

Zaita, no it doesnt have to be a tang. I'd love a flame angel but afraid they'd eat some of my corals. I plan on getting a bellus angel once I upgrade. I have to ask, how many surgeries have you had cause of the bike? Luckily I haven't had any yet. I'm not all about speed but I'm never on two wheels if you know what I mean.
Nikee, unfortunately a naso will outgrow my biggest tank (300g). |

In their book "Surgeonfishes, Rabbitfishes, and Their Relatives", Kuiter and Debelius classify the lavender tang as Acanthurus nigrofuscus. I had seen this tang classified as a Ctenochaetus species on the websites of some online livestock vendors.
I bought one of these recently. It has become my favorite fish. Constantly grazing. Also eats flakes and nori. Actually quite beautiful as well.
