So - this morning our Tomini Tang had a handful of small white dots near his face and on his fin. I am worried that it is ick?
By the time I left for work, it looked to be gone. Is that possible? Would our cleaner shrimp clean it off for him? Is there a way to check our water for parasites? All of our parameters are right on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The only way to confirm for sure is a skin scrape and looking at it under a microscope. Just keep a close eye on it for now. Sometimes fish get sand stuck in their mucus when they sleep, and that's what you see.

I subscribe to the theory that says that everyone has ick in their systems. My blue tang and powder blue always have a couple of spots. 2-10 is fine, 50-100 is bad. I wouldn't worry about a couple spots that come and go.

I have seen fish with white spots of some kind in the morning and have them fall off within a few hours.....then the next morning it can be worse....then none.....then worse again and they don't fall off. Keep an eye on it.

Thank you...
Is it worth starting to soak the food in garlic? We have two other tangs... is it contagious? |

Yes it is regarding the spreading of the ich (or other). But if the other fish are strong, they likely won't get spots on them. Those tomini tangs are something else. I got one from exotic, didn't qt and went through hell for the next 4 months trying to get things back in order. The garlic thing is up for grabs to me...I'd get the tang out of the tank first.....unless it has been in the tank for a long time and this is just a couple of spots that go away with time. I have again 2 ich specks on my emp's eye but I don't do anything to fix it.....it will fix itself.
How long have you had this tang, and anything else new in the tank? |

Thanks danorth: I've had the tomini for just over a month. We put in a new blue spotted jawfish this weekend and the tomini chased it around a bit. We had our hands in the tank quite a bit over the weekend, adding frags and fishing out a savage beast of a serpent starfish.
I'll keep a close eye... happily

Add a Cleaner Shrimp or 2? The Cleaner Shrimp will take care of it if there are only a few spots.
